besides messing with hardware what ways does one go about overclocking say an amd athlon xp processor laptop? software wise if possible?

you generally need a motherboard with adjustable voltage, and a bios with an adjustable multiplier

store-bought pc's have the multipliers locked, they're specialty gaming boards

if you know the exact model number of your processor, you might try searching, and see if it's hackable

i know some early pentium 4's could be hacked to change the multiplier, and the old amd thunderbirds could be changed, as well

the newer ones are all locked, without proprietary hardware, tho

Overclocking laptops is usually a bad idea because of the limited space, mediocre heatsinks, and effects on battery life and heat ... I wouldn't advise it ...

]i wouldnt OC a lap top cus it raises the heat.

but to OC you go in to bios and up your front side bus on cpu and you always want the

memory front side bus to match that of the cpu

normally when raising the FSB you'll need to up the voltage to the cpu

thats what makes things run hotter.

agreed dont even bother oc'ing a laptop, the increased heat and drain on the battery isn't worth it, just buy a faster laptop

pretty sure they're capped at the rated clockspeed, tho

you always want thememory front side bus to match that of the cpu

not necessarily you can always run a divider, granted you may lose a little performance but not much

true you can run CPU FSB higher than memory but you won't get the performance.

but i always over clock my CPU as far as my memory will go.

but i have a old barton 2500 and it will go farther than my memory ever thought about going

i used to have a barton 2500, some XMS memory and an asus nforce2 board... was a great OC'er
