The XXX has alot more potential than the 8W7's, but it also would need alot bigger box too. If you have the space, the XXX would be the superior setup (louder but with similar SQ). If you have the room, there aren't many subs that can hang with the new XXX. None that could seaaled. But if space is tight, the new style XXX is a very poor choice. The XXX has some amazing things about it. But with that amazing amount of displacement potential comes a drawback... enclosure size. RE bullshits us with their recommended sizes because they knew if they gave out realistic enclosure sizes, alot fewer people would buy them on the grounds of lack of space. Unfortunately, this means alot of people end up putting them in way too small of enclosures (per RE's recommendation), receive peaky/shallow performance, and decide to move on to a different driver. A sub that should be legend, that should dominate when applied correctly, is more and more being seen as an abomination every day due to people putting them in incorrect enclosures. RE has tried to BS us into believing their product is more versatile than it is. But in doing so, they have actually given themselves, and their product, an undeservedly poor reputation based on performance. The truth is the performance isn't lacking, but the enclosure size recommendations are. Basing what you think the speaker is designed to do, or capable of, on youtube videos.... makes as much sense as making your choice by throwing darts at a dart board while blindfolded.
