Official Betting on Plane treadmill thread.

Found this thread over at the Discovery forum:

I have just received an email from Dan Tapster, executive producer of MythBusters.

Thanks to all the activity, he can't log in and asked me to post this for him.

"Adam? Jamie? Dan? Someone step up and tell us what happened tonight."

Dear all,

As wbarnhill called out, I thought I should step in to what is rapidly becoming a hornet's nest. I will try to calm things down but I don't hold out much hope!

First up, for those concerned that this story has been cancelled, don't worry, planes on a conveyer belt has been filmed, is spectacular, and will be part of what us Mythbusters refer to as 'episode 97'. Currently that is due to air on January 30th.

Secondly, for those very aggrieved fans feeling "duped" into watching tonight's show, I can only apologize. I'm not sure why the listings / internet advertised that tonight's show contained POCB. I will endeavor to find out an answer but for those conspiracy theorists amongst you, I can assure you that it will have just been an honest mistake. At one point
several months ago, POCB was going to be part of Airplane Hour. Somewhere, someone has mistakenly posted the wrong listing. It will have been a genuine mistake but nonetheless it was a mistake which is unacceptable. As said I will try to find out what went wrong and hope that you will see fit to forgive the team at Discovery.

Thanks in advance,

Dan
And with that, the entire board is going "READ ONLY" until I can clean up the mess.

MythMod
That was posted on 7-20-07, so this is the second time it has not aired. Perhaps Jan 30th like mentioned?

Um...Yes the plane will still take off no matter how fast the treadmill is going in matched speed. As stated...rollerblades, treadmill, rope tied to tree...Can you pull yourself forward?

Now, betting discussion only. Put your money where you mouth is or GTFO my thread nub.
Not so fast there. The moment you pull yourself forward, the wheel speed exceeds the treadmill speed. Therefore, using those constraints, you aren't following the riddle.

i dont see why there is so much debate on if this is going to work or not.
if a car is being dynod is there any downforce created?

NO

there is no air moving, just the tires.

no air moving=no lift.
Car driving wheels vs. plane's freespinning wheels.

I don't know why people have so much trouble with this "myth". It's blatantly obvious: it depends on the version of the riddle you read. In the original riddle, where the treadmill speed matches the speed of the PLANE, it will take off without trying. You could take off the landing gear and get a super low friction surface and do it again and it'll take off. In the spawned off version where the treadmill speed matches the speed of the WHEELS, it plane won't take off because of the friction between tires and the treadmill. Now, if you made the tires frictionless and had a frictionless treadmill where they don't have any grip, it COULD feasibly take off, but chances would be good that the speeds wouldn't match. Point being, in the most real life situation with the original riddle, the plane takes off without any effort on anything except the wheel bearings.

Incorrect...

The myth is take off speed, not wheel speed. so if Im pulling at 2mph, then the treadmill is going at 2mph...

Scammer!

I really don't give a shit. It's ten bucks. And I really didn't win. But I knew the mythbuster's crew would fvck it up somehow
Lol yeah they royally F'd up on this one IMO.

I will hold to my bets if they actually do this test, until then I will remain pissy and not pay you lawl!
