Odd power problem

I'm trying to replace the factory radio in my 2001 Chevy Cavalier. I bought the proper wiring harness and installed a Sony CDX-GT200 I had lying around from a car I sold years ago. It will accept and eject a CD but thats it. No other power. No display lights, no static. Nothing! Thinking the unit was bad from years of sitting in my basement I bought a Sony CDX-GT260MP. Same issue. No sound, no display but the unit will accept and eject CD's. So it's getting power. I can hook the factory radio back up and it works fine. Any thoughts?

Id take that HU to the car battery and hook it up there /power,and ground to see if the face lights up, and test it out, thats the easiest ive been able to do without using a dmm,,ive tested out amps for power up this way as well..seems to work for me..just a suggestion

What the heck is a turn on lead? Last time I hooked up a stereo it was a cassette deck in a 66 Tempest! I assuemed that if I matched all the wires from the unit to the harness this thing would work.

You are correct..it should work that way..Sometimes you can get the wrong harness/sent also..have you checked to see if the fuse on the back of the radio is good??Something to check out also,and you may also try the reset button on the hu as well,some are located just behind the cd face,a toothpick will work just fine for that,hold in for 5-10 seconds

quick test twist the yellow and red wires together and touch them to the positive battery terminal and the black wire to the ground terminal and press the power button, if it comes on you may need to run a turn on lead from your fuse panel or find the one in your dash. time to break out the DMM and start testing!

Agreed..you can take the unit to the battery to test out if you want.

Problem is that your car requires a more expensive harness ($40ish on ebay, $100ish from best buy) to be plug and play because the stock turn on wire works on a data signal from the body control module. You will not find a switched power source in the stock harness of your car. You will need to take the red switched power wire from your unit and run it to another circuit. I've had luck using an add-a-fuse to tap into the wiper or sunroof circuits in the fuse box (anything that turns on and off with the key will work). After that, you will be functional. You will have lost door chime functions and the 10 minute playback where the radio stays on when you turn off the car, until you open the door. Everything else remains the same.

Basic Wiring ..as followed;

YELLOW-Memory back-up lead/connect directly to battery

RED-Power lead/accessory+ 12v

BLACK-Ground lead/connect to vehicle chassis ground

BLUE/WHITE-Amplifier turn on lead/connect to remote turn on lead of amplifier

BLUE,solid-Auto antenna lead

ORANGE/WHITE-Illumination lead/Connect to car power supply terminal for illumination

BROWN-Phone mute lead,if you have

These are the basics for powering up the hu,rest are speakers wires and additions
