i am about to go active myself, as far as gear you'll need:

a h/u capable of it, pioneer premier 880/800prs or alpine 9887

a 4 channel amp

a sub. and amp

and a good component set. or a set of highs and a set of mids...

from what i have learned the biggest pro is going to be picking your own crossover points. this will allow for a more detailed tuning of your system... the cons would be that it takes time (at least for me so far) to get everything just right...

just my $.02

edit: you can get a external crossover instead of h/u if you wanted to...

well you can also use eclipse hu's, and others. but ya i thought that's all there was, but what about active crossovers and all that? also, if you have good components with a passive crossover, what do you do with those?
? i'm not understanding... when running active you take the passive crossover out, and run the highs and mids directly off each channel of your 4 channel amp, then with the active crossover, you pick the crossover points, slopes, etc. as opposed to having a passive do it for you. if you get a h/u with a built in active crossover, that's all you need, if not, you get an external....

you can't just hook tweeters straight up to an amp
The whole point of active bi-amping is that all the crossover functions are handled at line-level, before the amplifiers - so yes, you can hook the tweets right up to the amp //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Throw the passives away, make them into bookends, doesn't really matter what you do with them, because they're not needed.

Okay, let's see if I can clarify a little.

The cheapest GOOD decks with the processing you will want are...

Eclipse CD7000, CD7100, CD7200

Pioneer 800PRS and 880PRS

As far as the passive xovers, those go away, thats why its active.

For your front stage, you will either need 2 amps, 1 for highs and 1 for mids, or a 4 channel that you can control each set separately.

The idea is that you control what frequencies are sent to the amp for each channel. Actively being able to change them.

but the passive crossover is where you come off of the amp to the tweets/mids. how do you connect then to the amp? you can't just hook tweeters straight up to an amp so how do u go about wiring everything
active hu --> 4 channel amp --> speakers... one set of rca's on the back of h/u for high, one for mid, one for low... pick xover points with h/u, now yer active...
