is it similar to putting sand in a woofer and watching it fly around, but with much higher frequencies??
pretty much. the designs you are seeing in the sand are nodes, or standing waves. the sound vibrates the pannel, the pannel vibrations move the sound, the sand stops at the area where there are nodes in the waves.

so you are saying, if we got a semi riged (like cardboard) thing, and attached it to the cone of a EV (for expierements sake) somehow, and put some sand\rice\ect on it and played a real slow sweep from say, 400hz~15k it would do that stuff?
