Nikon D60 vs. Canon Rebel XS

D40 doesn't have internal autofocus. Everyone will be biased towards their own brand, but you should go to a camera store and feel both, see which one you like the feel of. I think for Nikon the D40x is the oldest you want to go, while with Canon you can go all the way back to the 6mp Digital Rebel or the Rebel XT if you don't have a problem with it being used. The D40's 6mp is enough, remember, the sensor will be larger, so there will be much less noise and the ability to use higher ISOs safely. The only major benefit of megapixels will be the ability to crop, so don't buy into the marketing hype of that.

But the d40 is only 6.1 pixels correct???
exactly how large does a beggining photog need to print? thats a pretty large pic...

yes, true. which is why i said he would be limited with lenses... but its also pretty **** cheap, and pretty **** capable, which is why i suggested it. its what i currently shoot, and it suits my needs. i would LOVe to have more, but just cant afford it. and every lens i buy for the D40, will fit any nikon camera i choose to step up to //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

im looking at the xs, only really because i want the live view feature where you can look through the lcd instead of only the view finder, both are nice cameras, xs is also a little bit cheaper, im looking at the kit with 18-55mm lens and 75-300mm for like $525 free shipping form BH photo video

My d80 kicks but, the d60 should be very similar.

nikonians.com should be a stop before you make

the final decision, read up on the d60 there.

Just got my my d60 today and I LOVE it! Been playing around with it a bit and even for a first time DSLR user like myself it's fairly simple to operate and has plenty of features and stuff I have no clue what does lol.

Both great cameras IMO, but I like the Canon Rebel XS a little bit more.
I have thought about selling my Sony Cybershot to get it, but I love the lens on my Sony, which essentially is why I paid so much for it.
Sort of why I bought Canon, the 70-200 f/4 is the cheapest L glass, but it is also one of the sharpest. Its sharp wide open pretty much from corner to corner. With Nikon the closest you can get is f/2.8 VR and costs 3.5x as much, but is closer to Canon's offering, but not everyone needs that much. When it comes down to it, the camera doesn't matter a whole lot, just take plenty of pictures to see what works for you, then learn from your mistakes and improve.

Remember, always add vignetting, because it will make a crappy picture look 10x better!
