DELAND, Fla. -- When a motorist ran over a Volusia County family's dog, a terrier, and left him dead in the road, the family started exercising their freedom of speech.

The family expressed themselves through a sign in their front yard reading: To the person who killed my dog and didn't stop, may you rot in hell.

"Spike got the best spot in the bed, and Spike got the best of the covers," Bob Litteton said.

But Wednesday morning, Spike disappeared from their fenced-in yard and escaped.

It didn't take long for Bob to find Spike at an intersection, dead in the road.

"A lady who walks her dog had seen the car and saw the person hit Spike and continue on down the road," Littleton said.

"It's like losing a family member. It's not just a dog," Share Littleton said.

"I'm sure that my son doesn't want people to burn in hell because they hit a dog, but you can understand the anger that went with it. It's the thoughtlessness," Bob Littleton said.

"Granted it's a dog, whatever, it could have been a child. It was a child to me. It was my child. And this is the little grave with his Spike on it for Spike," Danielle Deery said.

The family said the sign is not meant to offend people, it's meant to hit the person who killed Spike right where it hurts.
Sounds like they are not very happy about the situation. (Not that I would be either, I think its a great idea)

Guess it depends on how much you value animals....

I am curious what the person should do.

Say "I am sorry you were irresponsible and let your dog run in front of my car."

I would contemplate keep going as well...I would want to fight some guy because he couldn't control his dog, or worse yet have him try to sue me.

I assume this exposes my feelings on the value of pets...but I do understand other's attachment...it just doesn't make sense to me.

Here in the communist wealth , the person who hit the dog ( any animal for that matter ) and didn't report it. Can be charged with felony hit and run . //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Who do you report it to? The police?

How does one determine the difference between a bet and a stray? I know people who have racccoons and squirrels as pets....(I am from TN //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif )

I suppose it's a "reasonable person test" kind of issue.

I'm sure they understand the incident is not the fault of the driver. It is insensitive not to make an effort though of seeing if a house nearby is the owner. I would. Pets aren't animals, they are family members and if you can't put a high value on that, then you are more doomed than I thought.

Eh, I think just a Sorry, your dog ran in front of my car and I was unable to stop in time would have sufficed. But then, this assumes that he coulda known who's dog it actually was. He is not entirely to blame however, as the dog should not have been running around free in the first place.

I think a felony hit and run for an animal is a bit silly however.....

He isn't to blame for hitting the dog at all. He is of course to blame for being so thoughtlessness that he couldn't even stop to see if the dog was indeed a goner or in need of help and to make a little effort toward the situation. Sadly I am willing to bet he had the same response 80% of the people in the world nowadays would.

I personally do not put a high value on animals where I can fully understand where others do. Just because I don't have those feelings personally, does not mean I cannot empathize (yeah, pretty sure I butchered that word).

But you can also see how one could be motivated by fear to not report such an incident....not because of disrespect.

What should he do?

What is he responsible for?

some ******* driver was doing a 3 point turn in the middle of the road at the end of a blind corner on a 55 mph windy road. I slammed on my brakes, but my truck doesnt stop fast so i swerved and sideswiped the girl stopped behind him. The guy finished his 3pt turn and left and didnt even stop to see if everyone was okay when it was his ****ing fault

Yep the police , an it doesn't matter if it's a domesticated pet or a wild animal . Also any act of animal cruelty here is a felony as well. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Tis the law here my man. It's not really enforced much , kind of hard to say who hit what when no one actually saw it except for the driver and the animal . //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Interesting.
I hit a deer not too long ago...didn't even slow down.

Knock on wood , I have never hit a deer . Had one run into the side of me while I was sitting still though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Everytime I hate TNs laws, I look around and think we don't have it so bad.

IF it's fun , can be made fun , or can turn into fun, it is illegal in the communist wealth. You can be arested for public intoxication on your own property , if you are visable from the road. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Yet we have police chiefs caught on tape telling there deputies how to launder drug money from selling the drugs that they were confiscating from people. And he only get's a couple years in prison , with all but 1 month suspended. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif
