Well, not many manufacturers use those old 4-spoke frames anymore. And like said above, a 7" spider with a 4" coil? No thanks.

Not PAP built. 4 spoke frame with a small 7 inch spider, I sure hope that doesn't use a 4 inch coil with that size spider.

Not necessarily. If high excursion is not a success factor in the design, there is little need for extremely large spiders/surrounds. Full excursion is seldom reached in music only content so why bother investing is something that provides little return to the consumer?

So basically you are saying high excursion is only good for SPL? I disagree. Its in the transient nature of music that high excursion capabilities can be utilized.
Its actually most SPL oriented subs these days that dont bother competing in the 'excursion wars'. Its the SPL guys that burp a single note, very near enclosure tuning, where excursion is at a minimum. In this situation, thermal limits of the driver are much more likely to be met before mechanical limits.

hmmm looking at the glue joint it doesnt look like a 4in coil anyway. looks like a 2.5 or maybe a 3in
