Nesessary to get a new HU?

I have a '00 Nissan Maxima GLE. My question is this:

My car comes with a stock BOSE system (Amp, Sub, speakers) but I want to get a new woofer and amp.

1) Would I have to replace the headunit too, or can I just switch out the Amp & Sub?

2) If I got a new sub, would I have to get new speakers too becuase they might not be able to handle the power?

But will it work if I replace the factory sub and amp with a new sub and amp? Or will I need to replace speakers/HU?

I'd replace the factory hu with an aftermarket, it'll give u more options and u could also get a bluetooth unit
