Next time your out and this starts happening check the amp for heat by putting you're hand on it, it should be fairly warm but not crazy hot.

Also check you're system voltage while pounding the tunes, if its dipping into the 10volt range while the engine is running you need to look at a better alternator.

Go buy/borrow/steal a digital multimeter to check the DC voltage at the battery terminals.

I once had a problem with the system fading out and it turned out to be a seriously undersized electrical system, thie music would fade out and the amps would get crazy hot, a bigger battery, upgraded grounds and a bigger alternator fixed the problem.
