My Brand Experience

Many make claims about equipment and base there opinions on hear say. I don't think of myself as a nuthugger to any brand but do have a few brands that I am a fan of because of my own experience with that brands products. I was in the classified section and popped into a thread for a Mmats 4000.1. I noticed my comments lean towards a favoritism or nuthuggery as you guys say. So I figured I will elaborate a bit, so if your curious why well here is why. If your not curious or just don't care about my opinion then on the top of the screen is a back button, feel free to use it instead of bashing. I am simply telling why I am a fan of mmats, from my own experience that's all. Feel free to post your experience regarding the brand you like and why. I personally would like to know your brands story, maybe I can try that 1 brand to.

It all started about 12 to 14 years ago. I had a Chevy Astro high top conversion van and had built the system a few different ways and 1 day I tripped over a pair 13W7's for sale used locally. At the time that was the hot sub and many cars throughout NYC were running them. I snatched them up for a fair price and began rebuilding my vans electrics and components to accommodate the beastly subs. Most of the cars I know of that were running these subs were also running a pair of the 1000 watt jl amps. One of the big boy shops on queens blvd happened to had sold and installed this setup in many of the cars that I knew of, from Brooklyn, queens, and Manhattan. I was living in the lower est side at the time and there were a few cars there that came from exactly this shop and setup. I happen to know one of the shops installers, he is a talented fabricator but his equipment and actual audio knowledge is good enough. In other words, I have given him advice on creative ways to wire things and make crap work effectively. Hey I don't know it all but I do know enough to get us all in trouble and maybe start a fire.

Anyway. I personally was not sold on the $600+ for 1000 watts of JL power, so began my search for something more reasonable but effectively good. I happened to go to West Palm Beach to get drunk and party with my cousin who lived down there. While I was there a friend of his had a lil amp beating the hell out of 3 10's. Yes it was a mmats amp. After speaking with him briefly I decided to stop into mmats headquarters since they are in the area. They received me kindly, but said they cannot sell me anything locally because of dealer crap. Since there were no dealers local to me, back in NYC, he could fill my need over the phone. Badabing, I ordered a 2200.5 the same day I got home. Installed everything in my van and waited paitently for lil girl to arrive.

20 minutes after I installed the amp.... Pop goes the weasel an she was dead.

On the phone WTF. Apologies accepted. Amp on fedex truck overnight. Next day received a call from bench tech asking WTF did I do lol. All taken care of and back on fedex truck overnight shipping. I shipped overnight, they return shipped overnight, dam.

.35 wired up the 13W7's and hit the street. I think about 4 to 6 weeks later I happened to stop into the shop my boy works at on queens blvd. after a few minutes the shop manager asked about the van parked outside. Yes sir that is me, need me to move it? No your good, just curious what subs you are running in there? Well sir the same 13W7's you install in all of your customers cars. Bullsnit he replied. He actually said he had seen and heard me on the street on a few occasions, and complimented me for the thunderous, monstrous low end that was killing the block, from many blocks away. That is a true story. Both me and my boy looked at each other and laughed. He asked what was funny. We took him outside and showed him the home made unfinished cabinetry and the lil wonder that was beating the shnowzers off the JL's. He was surprised and amazed, and now shared in our laughter.

Needless to say.... The shop became a Mmats dealer. Am I fan of mmats? Yup, great service , products and people. Are they the best out there? Nope, I don't think so. There are quite a few brands out there that have impressed me equally. TC Sounds, Sundown, American Bass and JL Audio themselves just to name a few. What about you guys?

ive always liked mmatts, although ive no experience with the new stuff. my first subs were a pair of procast 12's in a box designed for orion xtrs, of all things, powered by an orion 250r. to this day that was one of the cleanest, most well balanced sub setups ive ever heard. have I had louder? without a doubt. have I had better sounding? yup. but ive never had something that could do both so well. the amps were always tiny powerhouses, but the older ones liked to burn up if abused.

as for my personal "faves"?

subs: old re/ (what is now fi). the old mt's and hc's were amazing, and in my experiences, scotts cs has been hard to beat.

amps: kicker, diamond audio/esoteric audio, old massive, orion. I'm sure the ca riff raff will love to call me a newb over the kicker name, but, plain and simple, they perform. not just that, their service department is AMAZING, and super well priced. no comments on pricing, I buy most my amps used.

headunits: I've used em all. I keep coming back to pioneer. specifically the old premier 860mp, or 880 prs.

speakers: focal. I've got my 2 old sets of utopia be's tufted away for my next sq install.

accessories/wire: stinger. its not the cheapest, its nut the latest forum boner. What it is: top notch equipment at a price commensurate to its performance.

fun thread!

I'm DD, higher end JL, Hertz/Audison. JBL and alpine if Im broke.

I have not personally owned a whole lot over the years but I grew up next to my dad that competed in the 90s where everyone had clam shells.

I came up on OG Rockford, and Pheonix gold.

My personal view is to always find the worst aspect of something and judge it off that.

I still love the old rf dvc woofers. Would kill to have a good pair! Could never get into pg stuff, although I know it's quality:).

My last set up was a pair of the last 12spoke re se 10d4s, on a saz1500v3. Still have the amp, but it is pushing a set of, that were bnib prior to me hooking then up, tc sounds tc2000 12s, simply love them. So much so, that I just got through driving a ford edge, getting something a lil bigger than the caliber simply so I can put the tc's in a proper ported box. These are the best subs I have ever had.

MCM is a super cheap brand, but **** their subs can sound good in proper enclosures.

I've always loved Dayton in both car audio and home audio.

Sundown has treated me right so far and CDT has done an amazing job with my experience.

The power dvc were one of the first pairs of real subs I had.
ah I remember debating if I should buy those or diamond audio macdaddys. chose the diamonds, and loved em, but always thought.. what if

Good philosophy there. I can't say anything bad about DD, great American made subs, amps are foreign but hold it down.
im not a dd user, but I dont think you can deny theyre great products!
