Ok, I got some issues here. The amp calls for a 1/0 gauge wire with a 150 amp fuse. I have a 4 gauge wire and an 80 amp fuse. If I switch out the 80 amp and install a 150 there, will the 4 gauge be enough? Also, Whats the best way to wire up two dvc type r 15's? I bought this amp yesterday and I wasn't even thinking of the other things I will need to upgrade. Thanks for any help in advance, wendall

What model Type-R are the subs? 1541D or 1521D?

For your sake, I hope they are 1521D as you can actually wire the pair so that they will pesent a 2-ohm load to the amp. A pair of 1541D subs will only present a 4-ohm or 1-ohm load (depending on wiring) and the amp won't handle the latter.

they are an older model. they are the swr-1540d. so i think that means i can only do a 4 or 1 ohm load. i was reading elsewhere that the 81000d could handle a 1 ohm load so long as you werent running test tones for hours on end. as for the feet of power wire im not 100% sure. its a pt cruiser that it will be in. a fairly small car, but i would say no more than 8-10 feet. what are your thoughts on running this amp at 1 ohm?

or if i used only one voice coil on each speaker wouldn't that bring it down to two ohms? how much woofer would i be sacraficing by doing this? will it be a noticeable difference?

Just keep in mind that the total RMS rating of the subwoofer is split across the # of voice coils. An Alpine Type-R subwoofer rated at 300W RMS actually has a per-coil limit of 150W RMS.

I am not aware of any potential problems of running a DVC sub with only one coil, however I suspect that you might find the response of the sub to be a little less than stellar. My engineer's mind tells me that the sub's motor assemblies were designed with the mentality that both coils would be used to power it, thereby sharing the kinetic mass of the cone.

But I'd actually have to dust off portions of my brain that I haven't used for years to prove or disprove that theory. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

thanks for that info, i didnt know that. if i read that diagram correctly, the load on my amp would only be a 2 ohm load. i would still be using all 4 voice coils which would make my rms per speaker 500 watts. i think that i would be right at the rms rating then. no more, no less. i just need someone to look at the diagram and reassure me that it is for 4 ohm dvc's. and also to verify that the load on the amp would still be 2 ohms.....

This link is to the Adobe PDF version of the user manual for the current generation Alpine 1541D subwoofer -- the successor to the one you have:

http://ecominet2.alpine-usa.com/html/asb/owner/swr-1541d_om.pdf

Inside it are some wiring diagrams that show you how to obtain all of the available impedance configurations using the sub. Since it is a dual 4-ohm sub, like yours, the wiring configurations will be the same. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Hope that helps.

Originally posted by wendall ok, thanks again. the amp in the wiring diagrams there only show it using one channel. will it make a difference if i use two?
If you're talking about the terminals on the 8100D amp, you would use only one pair if you are physically wiring the subs according to those diagrams. In other words, you will be establishing the 2-ohm load via wiring.

You use the second pair of outputs on the amp if you are running one pair to one 4-ohm subwoofer and the other pair to another 4-ohm subwoofer and want the amp to parallel the load internally.

That sounds confusing now as I read it. The MTX manual actually gives a pretty good diagram for what I was trying to describe.

for your sake i wouldnt worry bout the dvc...id worry bout if u got a bigger alt. secondary battery and a large cap...cause those amps are known to throw d/c current if they get below 11 volts..and that will lock up big subs so i know it will just have a hay day on type rs
