Hey I was just wondering is there a difference between 4'x8' sheets of MDF and the 16"x48" MDF shelving boards I am just wondering due to the big difference in color variation. And it would be easier to use then having to use a full sheet of MDF for what I am wanting to do.

I suppose you are asking about the "mdf" shelving boards at Lowe's?

They are not MDF, they are presswood. Some call it particle board. It is junk unless you have a very low powered system.

If you buy your MDF from Lowe's, they will cut it into pieces for you for free. And at the Lowe's by my house, their panel saw is very accurate.

It is usually Partical board they use for shelving not MDF.I would just buy MDF by the sheet and cut it to the demensions you want instead of piecing together an inferrior wood.

Birch FTW.

But shelving boards are never MDF commercially. They are presswood. LDF it's also called at local lumberyards. Junk for audio use.

Notice he described a color difference. They sell those Particleboard shelves in a variety of sizes, like 16x48, 12x48, and 12x72.

I worked at Lowe's las summer for the insurance....I saw so many kids come in to buy those to make a "cut-free box". Made a killing offering to build from MDF for them.

I have also noticed color variations in MDF as well.I have gotten darker almost redwood colored mdf then I have also gotten the standard pine colored MDF.I am assuming the redder ones are from darker trees???But have noticed no differance in strenght or sound quailty.

I was just wondering cuz I saw them at Home Depot. I mean it looks and feels like MDF and a different home depot I just went to even the color was the same, so IDK thats why I was asking, and no this piece isnt being used for the box itself. I am gonna use it as a floor in my trunk just cause it looks nicer and I think that it will be easier to apply suede to it in the end, then bare metal and in the end it will just look nicer I think. Ill take pics ill be starting a build log soon. After I go pick up my 2 Sonances and wiring etc. redoing my whole setup. Thanks for all the help guys.

I went to a lowes the other day to get some mdf and they said they don't sell 3/4in a their site anymore! Said they only sold 7 pieces allyear. So I had to go to a different lowes to get it.
