this is a noobie question, but what are the advantages of a mcintosh hu? people talk about it as if it is god sent. is it tunability? the voltage rating? what makes a mcintosh hu so special?

Its like comparing a Lexus to a Geo. They both get the job done, one just does it better.

The sound quality is what makes it what it is. Good parts.

It's bare bones raw quality. No bells, no whistles, no neon.

Two knobs, one extremely simple screen, a couple buttons for bass, treble, balance, face.

They are built with extremely good quality parts and tend to outlast the cars they are in. They are also pure in sound with no bias or noise.

Following the garbage in, garbage out rule....... as long as you stick a worthy amp and processor behind this head unit, you'll hear sound like you have not heard from the over processed units on the market.

I'm debating ripping the Bose system out of my Mercedes CLK430 and sticking this in with my Audio Control EQT'S and Focal components with a single 4 channel PPI Art Ax400. I'll be doing that if no one purchases the head unit soon.

That's the hard part of owning $1000.00+ radios.......... when it's time to sell, people rarely choose quality over price.

I am considering trades on multimedia head units, since I want to set up an AV system in the Benz.

i am very interested. its just that i am somewhat new to car audio. i am a man of quality over price and i dont understand how all of these newer headunits like that of the 880 with all of its tunability, could surpass, or, NOT surpass this hu.

does this then mean that other people buy headunits because of the various adjustabilities?

in comparison to lets say...a top of the line alpine headunit, what are you REALLY paying for? the adjustability? the lights? the name?

There is no comparison to an alpine head unit. It's a completely different concept.

That's for looks (and sounds pretty good).

This is for sound (and looks pretty good too).

I don't know what to tell you man. It has two knobs and screams out music like you've never heard. That's about it. There are no "features", No "bells and whistles", and you can't compare it to anything else on the market, it is not a radio designed to draw attention like every other one out there (Nakamichi excluded from that comment).

Ya stick a cd in it and turn up the volume. You don't get any other options beside a simple bass or treble knob.

If you want your system to sound the best it can, buy this radio. Period.

If you want to do interfacing with av systems, microwaves, pacemakers, small kitchen appliances, buy an alpine. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

This radio is made to do only one thing, play crystal clear music.
