Im looking for some suggestions on makeing wood look like plastic. I'll be building my own boxes for my amps shortly and want the inside of the boxes too have a nice smooth shiny plastic appearance. I'd like it to be red or white, havent decided just yet. The outsides will be covered in vynil and carpet.

Thanks everyone.

What "wood" are you using? MDF is what all will recommend. What I usually do is mix up some bondo. Spread it on real thin and give a light sanding. Then paint away my friend.

Let me throw my two cents in //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif If you plan on just using MDF, then I wouldn't bother with the glass or the, milkshake, or the bondo. instead just sand the mdf smooth. Then prime it with Killz ( get it at walmart , home depot, Lowes ) It's a stain blocker primer. Then sand lightly between coats. Usually takes two coats. Then sand with 220 Before painting. Then paint using light dusting coats to prevent fisheyes, drips and such. Viola mdf that looks like glass. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Yeah, good call.... I totally forgot about the stuff. Basically a fairly thick primer, right?

any seems though, I'd still fill with bondo, sand, primer, paint.

have fun!

I personally use the oil based. It seems to give better results than the latex. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Ok let me get this straight from what one of the guys said

so after doing this it'll look like fiberglass but half as cheap?

so in easier directions this is how you'd do it?

Step # 1: Buy all your supplies - MDF Wood, Sand Paper, Primer (Killz Brand), Paint, Clear Coat.

Step # 2: Sand down the wood really really smooth do it twice to be sure //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Step # 3: Primer it. Just spray light coats of primer.

Step # 4: Sand in between coats lightly.

Step # 5: Right before you paint sand one more time w/ 220 sand paper for good before finish!.

Step # 6: Paint lightly and good strokes! so it don't dripps or runs.

Step # 7: After paint dries add several coats of clear coat let dry and add again.

Step # 8: Enjoy

Yep pretty much. The killz fills in the tiny voids in the surface of the mdf. It also selas the mdf and keeps the paint from being absorbed by it. It gives you a perfect surface to paint on. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
