I havent been ice fishing in years but I remember reeling in some brookies back in the day! But never a 9lb one!SHAPLEIGH -- A Waterboro man is the holder of a new Maine record for the largest brook trout ever caught.
The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says the fish weighed just over 9 pounds. It was caught through the ice Jan. 8 by Patrick Coan of Waterboro on Mousam Lake in Shapleigh.
The size of the fish was certified on a supermarket scale. Biologists say fin clips show the record fish was a product of a state hatchery.
The previous record brook trout was an 8 pound 8 ounce fish caught in 1979.
Inland Fisheries and the Maine Sportsman newspaper have maintained the state record book for more than 30 years.
