Kenwood KAC-7202

Just bought a kenwood KAC-7202 920 watt 2 channel amp for my two MTX Thunder 4500s (225 watt RMS), and was wondering what anyone thinks of this amp, as i could not find any reviews on it. I just picked it up because it wasnt a bad price and it was 230 watt x 2 at 2 ohms which is only 5 more than the RMS of the sub, so i thought it was a good match. anyone know anything about this amp?

That amp is rated for 230w X 2 @ 2 Ohms, yes, but I would think those MTX subs are 4 Ohm drivers, no?

right but i was told by the guys at best buy, and read in my subs' user manual, that two 4 ohm subs (single voice coil) powered but either a 2 channel or mono amp (it doesnt matter) would have a 2 ohm load (i assume since there are two of them, even though i dont completely understand this), and i was told that i would be getting the 230 watts. was i misinformed??? hope not because if i was the amp is going right back to best buy.

You were misinformed. You can wire them for a 2-ohm load with a mono amp, but not with that 2-channel; it's not rated for a 2-ohm load when bridged. Take it back.

This amp would be a better match for your subs.

You could wire them in parallel and drive them with a single channel of your Kenwood amp with it in unbridged mode so they weren't technically completely wrong.

The problem with that is twofold:

(i) You'll only be giving those subs 230 watts total off of that one channel running at 2 Ohms for the pair or 115w each.

(ii) Running it that way leaves the other channel on the amp unused and that is simply inefficient use of equipment. That Alpine mono amp that KaeZoo suggested is a solid choice for your application ~ see if you can swap that 7202 for that since they are available at the same place. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

A guy I know is getting rid of one of these amps...and I am looking for something to power my MB Quart 216 6.5 " comps. How do you guys think this amp/comp combo would work?
