Kenwood HU pops then dies! Need Help!

Hi,

I'm fairly new to the car audio install community but I've done three builds over 20 years with never a problem - until now. I joined this site 'cause I've got a problem I just can't figure out. I have a 2008 Subaru Forester with an upgraded sound system including:

  • Infinity Reference 5350a 5-Channel Reference Series Amplifier
  • Infinity Reference 850W sub,
  • Infinity Reference 6020cs 6-1/2 inch door
  • Infinity Kappa 52.7i 5-1/4 inch door
  • Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X692
  • Kicker CK84 8 Gauge install kit

I raamated all doors and took my time. I think I did a good job on the HU harness and for 2 years this system worked flawlessly. My one complaint was that I didn't have strong mids and there was a bit of an "cave" or "well" sound that was frustrating by comparison to the Lexicon system in our Genesis.

So I started to fiddle with tuning the amp by adjusting the high and low pass filters consistent with most guides on how to tune an amp after an install.

So here is the problem: After listening to the system for about a half an hour (it varies), I'll get a loud "pop" and the HU will go into protect mode. I turn it off and turn it on again and everything is fine for about a day or so and then it will randomly pop and the HU will shut down. I am not sure but it also seems like the driver's side window studders when rolling down and up more than it used to (not sure if this is relevant). The battery seems ok in terms of no problem starting the car.

Thinking I had a short, I've checked the ground (8" from the amp, 8 gauge screwed into the metal floor board) and made sure that the amp wasn't touching metal. I also pulled all of the door panels and checked to ensure that the door speaker contacts weren't touching metal - all looked good.

Granted, it could be the wiring harness but it never gave me grief for 2 years and I don't take my car off road. In fact the system shuts down on smooth roads and even when the car isn't moving. So do y'all have any ideas on trouble shooting this, or what could be causing this? Thanks in advance and sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum.
