I'd try using an abrasive pad and some hot soapy water first of all. I know this is how cast iron is usually cleaned.

If you try steel wool don't use a real abrasive/rough piece. Get a finer piece and try that

Simple Green, I use it to clean the bikes after a race. It talke all the dirt, oil, and whatever else gets on it.

just use a fine cut steel wool pad you can pick up at home depot by the packs. very cheap.

then, pick up a can of Rustoleum BBQ flat black spray paint. after you "clean it up", spray paint it with the flat black. they will look sexy.

shit i did the same thing with my rear brake drums. they were rusted to all hell. now they look like new.

Simple green is BOMB for oils and greases and what not... but that's rust. OP needs steel wool.

use degreaser... we use purple degreaser at work on all kinds of metal... it will come off very easy..

Oxalic acid will do some crazy work on the rust, and also prevent it in the future.
