Stores generally have poorly designed sound rooms, so its not uncommon to see this. Just because it sounds better in the sound room, in no way entitles it to sound better in a car setup, but if you like them so much, then go buy them.

 
I had to sell cheaper pre-fab band pass boxes at my old job, with careful placement, a really high xover setting and a shit load of bass boost I was able to get them to bump half decent,In the store.

They make little to no bass in a car due to poor enclosure design, the typical tuning frequency of the ports for cheap bandpass boxes is 60 to 80 hz when it should be below 40hz.

If you really want one you will need to modify the box to get any decent bass out of it. What you do is remove the Plexiglas front panel then stuff some polyfill(pillow stuffing) into the ports then seal the ports off. You have now made a small sealed enclosure for the subs.
