Is this correct?

regardless of the amount of watts, there is only a certain amount of cone that you can fit into a car.
since noise is defined by the movement of air, and you need cone space to move air, (xmas) the car stereo can only be so loud...

so what, he's got a 17K system, if you believe that watt = loud then his car is louder than most festival size rigs...

but since it's all funning into 1 ohm, I suspect what actually happens is everything just gets rather hot instead of rather loud.
he is talking about GM 17kw system..

Here's what you say to him in response to his ignorant comment about the 17k system not being louder than a pro sound rig:

Those 17k watts in the car are all going into bass. You need that much power to create that level of sound pressure at those frequencies. The lower the frequency, the more power it takes to produce that frequency at a specific decibel level. So in a full concert system for a medium sized hall, 17k watts is overkill because you only need a couple thousand watts on bass and a combined thousand watts for mids and highs.

And for full outdoor huge concerts they do use thousands and thousands of watts to get the amount of bass needed to cover an outdoor area.

p.s. I setup and run full concert systems for bands for part of my job

There is a point of diminishing returns... but if you haven't reached the mechanical limits of your subwoofer, then more power will usually = more SPL. Once you reach the mechanical limits, then you can add power till the cows come home and it won't help. Yes, a certain amount of the 17kW is lost as heat, but that's also the case with 1kW or 250W systems. It's inherently inefficient.

You should learn about it before you go talk to him. You will look like a jackass if you give him a response and can't back it up.

Sometimes it's just better to let it go. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif
