Is it possible to fry your computer by retrieving data?

Well after installing antivirus/spyware software my laptop mainly froze.

I mean you do thing but it would take forever. And that's cored2duao with 2gb of ram.

So anyway I don't know anything about computers plus im not authorized to fix it so i had to report it to Technical support. They came and took my laptop when i was gone for lunch.

Now they are telling me before formatting, when they attempted to retirieve the data from my laptop they fried their own computer.

I mean i don't know a lot about computer but this kinda stuff sounds ridiculous to me.

I am a computer tech, give me a little more information... how long have you had the PC, and where did you buy it at? Generally a HD wont fail when just running antivirus/security software sweeps, there had to been issues with it before that lead up to that point of failure. If you bought it brandnew and it did that, then it was a faulty drive that is still covered under factory warranty. Have you kept up with hard drive? defragged? remove temp files and all that jazz? LMK

corporate tech support and i/t sucks for the most part...they just ghost the drive when they dont feel like working on them or when they find stuff on the computer that isn't supposed to be there...but it's theirs so, they can do as they wish...i doubt it got "fried" while trying to recover stuff, there has to be something else to the story...

They gonna find all your **** on it. be prepared to find a new job happens all the time. 'Formatting' is a secret IT keyword for 'Writing a pink slip'

No **** on it at all. I do have COD2 installed on it though.

But they do put pressure on me by " So you installed unknown software without our authorization? "

Seems like they are going to give it back to me on Wednesday -- its not my first time actually.

But they are not even tied to our company, they are contractors but sure they won't a chance to talk sht about u

Its a company dell laptop. it should be less than a year old.

Only admins can do any type of work on it.
