Installing a Kenwood DDX-7015 in 2008 Silverado

Im installing this one in the NEAR future, and I know I have to get the aftermarket adapter for it to function properly with the chimes and what-not. I have a base model Silverado, so no frills like Bose or OnStar...

The Peripheral GMCOL29 (http://www.discountcarstereo.com/detail.aspx?ID=1128) that I was planning on using says I need a relay on the +12v RAP (ign/switched) line if it will see more than 1 amp. (see install guide= http://peripheralelectronics.com/periph_products/Instructions/gmcol29_instructions.pdf)

Does this sound right?

I'm assuming the DDX-7015 will draw more than 1 amp, right?

Is there a better adapter for a reasonable price????

Thanks,

Chad

you will be fine without a relay

but a quick heads up there is no room behind the radio area in that vehicle to fit a double din....some plastic will need to be removed inorder to get it to fit properly

Relays are easy to use.I use them on all my remote wires that I install. It simply uses the remote wire to switch the relay open and closed and you use the main power wire to supply actual power to turn on and off the equipment. It really helps when installing power hungry units like amps and such.

I know that they're not hard to use, but I was wondering if it would really fry the interface. oh well. worth the $5-10 not to find out.

I had one, a base silverado, and used the simple metra harness that has retianed power, without onstar. The dash is tight, but inside the dash seemed to have alot of room. Mine was a work truck so I couldn't cut on it, but it only stuck out a small amount, on a 6019.

Mine is a new body style work truck too! Which harness did you get, how much, and where did you get it? No OnStar or Bose or anything... I just want the cheapest thing that retains all of the chimes and functions from the factory.

That way, if I take it in for routine service they won't freak out and start poking around in my wiring. Or worse yet, try selling our company's fleet division on an expensive (unnecessary) repair and get my a$$ chewed.

Oh, and any idea which hideaway kenwood nav units are compatable with this touchscreen?

I think it was the metra XSVI-2105. It did not have the seat belt chime, or the clicker for the turn signal, but it wire up without any troubles. If you want to retain chimes, get the GMOS-LAN-01. The first one should be between 45 and 60, the second will be about 100.

The 7015 will work with the garmin, the KNA-G510. I love mine!!! I've also got the sirius brain, and a music keg. I think the garmin is about the easiest to use, and you don't have to fool with the disc!!

What "fooling with discs"? Are you saying I could just use a disc? How's that work? I was curious about how the gps capabilities worked... I would think it would need a reciever, and that the reciever would be built into the g510, along with the maps. As much as I like the idea of having the g510, I'm not ready to drop another couple hund-o on a gps unit that I'd only use occasionally. I also have the Sirius SIR-KEN1 for my current HU. I love it, and I read that it's compatible with the DDX-7015. (Hopefully I won't have to use the new setup with a separate SC-C1 reciever and KCA-SR50 HU translator interface. The plugs are sh!tty and don't stay connected well. AVOID THIS SETUP AT ALL COSTS!!!)

But back to the harness... The seat belt chime on my '05 Silverado barely gets on my nerves, but I could stand to lose it-- and maybe the blinker clicking. Being a service tech, I have my hazards on a lot. The clicking gets annoying if I'm sitting inside the cab taking a phone call or working on my laptop, but it also is a good reminder if I forget and start driving away with them on!

And does the "door-open with the key in the ignition" chime still work? Does that ever "temporarily malfunction"?

Because even after paying $60 for the "right" (Scosche maybe?) harness on my '05 in order to keep all the chimes, it sometimes still screws up. Usually if I start the truck with the driver door open, it continues to chime until I pull over and do some crazy raindance ritual of turning the truck on and off, while opening and closing the driver door. Nothing is more nerve-racking than driving while listening to a continuous door chime. Even if you drown it out with the stereo, you SWEAR you can still hear it in the back of your head.....

The more I think about it, I might just go for the $80 Peripheral harness on the new truck so I dont have to lose anything.

Ugh... I can't wait for the '08 to get here already. It's on its way to the dealer from the plant.

The KNA is simple to use!!! The disc that I was referring to is the pioneer units that use a disc for nav, and in the new ones, you have to eject the listening disc, insert the nav disc and find your destination, then remove it and reinsert the listening disc. I have my nav on the screen all the time!! It's handy just to see where some roads go, just in case I have to make a detour.

I use one of the old sirius brains, the sr901, but I'm not sure about the parts that you're listing.

As to the harness, it's up to you. I never used the flashers, but I could see the driving off!!! And as for the malfunction in the old harness, mine never had any issue like that. No noise, whine, or anything it shouldn't have done.

Yeah... It's like $10 bucks for one at Walmart. Thats no big deal. If I pull the Kenwood KDC-MPV619 out of my '05, I could probably just use the adapter out of that when I put the stock AM/FM RADIO radio back in. The adapters look the same online, but who knows.

They're offering to let me buy the '05 for $7000 with the Adrian Steel topper, shelving and all the goodies instead of taking it in trade for the new '08... And with 81,000 miles and new tires, I'm considering it. I'd just turn it over for a few hundred dollars more than I bought it for. Since it KBB's for at least $8700 for the truck alone, I'd be able to make a quick buck.

If I were you, I'd stay as far away from walmart when it comes to anything audio!! I would find a local specialty store and see what they can do for you.

As for the buyout, that's very tempting!! If you've got the money, go for it!!!
