i have a 98 grand cherokee with an infinity gold system. this includes an amplifier for the speakers that is mounted beneath the rear seats, i believe. what i am looking for is an answer as to which wires should be tapped into to hook up a amp and subwoofer. or if there is another easy way to hook up a subwoofer to the stock system, it is loud enough and sounds good so that i don't want to replace the head unit, just want to add my subwoofer from my old car to it.

Dude,

You should head up to walmart or a autoshop and find a wiring harness for your jeep. This will give you your wiring layout that will show you all of your wires that connect to your factory radio. Bring a paper and pen to write them down.... or buy it.

Your power cable should run straight to your battery and your ground should be grounded to your car frame. Make sure you remove any paint on the area that you will use as the ground. If all possible get it shiny, back to the metal finish. Use atleast 8 gauge wire for both. Don't forget to put a fuse no further then 18 inches from your battery... or it could mean MELTDOWN !!

The only wires that will need to go to the sub and amp will be a remote turn on.... usally a blue wire, and your speaker outputs from your factory radio. You will have to use a line level converter that will convert the signal to your amp. You will have to use one of these since your factory radio does not have rca outputs. You can use splice-taps to tap into the rear speaker outputs from your factory radio and extend these to your amp. Hope this helps !!

if you want to grab the wires at the amp(under the right rear seat i think) you wont be able to use the harness at walmart(that is made for at the radio). what you will need is a tone generator. Turn the car on with the volume on the radio all the way down, then test the wires at the amp to find out which ones are the speakers, the connect the level converter to them.

alot of amps have a "high-level" input - meaning you can directly connect/splice the speaker wires from your car to the new amp without the need for a line level converter. all you have to worry about is the power, ground, and remote turn on wire. and some amps eliminate the need for a remote turn on wire when using the high-level inputs.
