I suppose if you want to look at it from that point, then yes it only becomes a "sound" when it's interpreted by our ears/brain but logically I think you can define sound as vibrations in the air regardless of interpretation.

Vibrations in the air that are within the audible freq range are "sounds", whether anyone is there to hear them or not. To suggest otherwise is to not know the definition of the word "sound".

i agree with whitedragon. a noise is a series of vibrations. so just because there is no one there, that doesnt mean it doesnt make a sound.
