I think I figured it out.

I'm 21 years old, and I work in a mailroom in a Bank of America office building. My job is to sort and deliver mail to the appropriate people in the building. If I were to stop reading the addresses on the mail I handle and just deliver it wherever I think is correct, I would inevitably deliver many a package to the wrong person, and probably get fired.

Now let's look at Washington DC. Our congressmen and women are voting really important bills into law... without even reading them. The stimulus bill and the cap and trade bill add up to thousands of pork-filled pages that congress has only really skimmed at best. Seriously-- the cap and trade bill was completed at 3 AM the night before it was voted on. There is absolutely no way someone could have even read the 300 page last-minute addition in the span of time that elapsed between the finishing of the document and the time it came up to vote.

If I, the humble mailroom worker, deliver my mail incorrectly, in the grand scheme of things it's really not a huge deal. But these congressmen are passing NATIONAL LAWS worth TRILLIONS of dollars without so much as reading them. In fact, Princess Pelosi was questioned about the upcoming healthcare bill. She was asked if there was going to be a five-day period to read over the bill before it goes up for vote. Her response? Nope.

That, my friends, is reckless.

I think the problem is that our congressmen and women are illiterate, and are ashamed to admit it. It's not that they don't want to read these bills, it's that they simply can't!

I would like to propose a plan to promote literacy on Capitol Hill, something I like to call "No Congressman Left Behind." It is a comprehensive plan that provides our legislators with the resources they need to learn to read effectively. It includes a Hooked On Phonics program for every senator and representative, a section in the Library of Congress dedicated solely to easy-to-read books about the Constitution, special Sesame Street videos that both promote literacy and teach the pitfalls of socialism, and night time reading classes for Congressmen.

Our nation's future hinges on the decisions our legislators make today. So let's make them count by equipping our congressmen with the skills necessary to read the bills they pass.

We may have to do some deficit spending to pay for this, but I believe it will pay for itself in time. You see, the government will save so much money because the congressmen will actually read the bills and go "Wow, this is stupid, and to think I would have passed this a year ago! Thanks Hooked On Phonics!" Thus, congressional spending will be reduced.

They're not just printing plans off the internet and passing them as laws. The pork in the budget is more based on individual responsibility of the Senator or Congressman rather than everyone deciding yes or no on whether or not some clinic in LA gets a million dollars for research. Whoever put it in there is ultimately responsible for it. It is reckless but there's really no other way to do it unless you would like a bigger government with even more expenses to comb over every bill and research the proposals. We'd get a lot more done then I'm sure. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

What happened to the whole philosophy of pork-free spending that Obama preached?

The dude said what it took to get elected and is slowly but surely going back on everything he's said.
