personally, it's a risk, but i wouldn't get the cops involved. send him an email saying you're interested in the products and want to come by to check them out and will purchase them if everything seems to be working correctly. arrange a meeting in a public place, but make it somewhere that he can't quickly get away. try to get him on foot away from his vehicle. chances are it's just some punk teenager that was looking for an easy steal. confront him about the situation sternly, and threaten to call the police and press charges once you get his name (do this once you get the radar detector in your hand as you are examining it for damages). bring a friend that can come at him from a different angle for backup in case you need some help confronting him. work out a "sign" between you and your partner so that your friend knows when to walk up, but make sure the equipment is yours first obviously. you could make the sign something like scratching your head in an unusual way or something.

if it turns out that this guy is a lot bigger than you, or if the situation looks kind of sketch, then just look at the items and say you didn't have cash today, but can get it tomorrow cuz you're waiting on a transaction or something, and that you just wanted to make sure the products were in quality condition before you wasted your time tomorrow getting the cash ready and all tomorrow (make up some excuse like you got a wedding to attend that's not in town, and a radar detector for the long drive would save you some time on the road or something). then contact the police and press charges. an escort passport isn't a cheap piece of equipment, and is worth the hassle of pressing charges.

i would have not called the cops until i for sure couldn't get a hold of this ***...i would have met up with him and simply stole your stuff back, nothing he couldve done if you set it up right, i think he wouldve handed you the stuff during the sale

Sorry to p1ss in your sweet tea buck but this guy will not sit a day in jail... he'll receive a misdemeanor for receiving stolen property because he will not likely say to the police "yeah, I stole that on the night of the 5th" He will tell them he found it or some sht like that.
I think we all know the long d1ck of the law only seems to screw the victims when it comes to stolen property.

I know you would like this guy to go to the clink and be repeatedly ***** up the azz but it aint gonna happen. The best you can hope for is getting your stuff back in the condition it was in.

While I agree with you to an extent, as you are probably right about the outcome, at least it will go on his record. The cops aren't stupid, once something like that goes on his record, he is targeted by the cops and will probably be questioned anytime some local car gets broken into.

On a side note, I had my identity stolen by a local once. The cop told me the same thing, 'he probably wont do jail time even if/when we catch him'. Well, they caught him. And in catching him, they found evidence he'd stolen the identity of dozens of people (he had check books, ID's, credit cards, etc). He DID go to jail, and I didnt even have to testify because there were so many other people lined up to do it for me.

Id rather get my stuff back, AND get him in trouble with the law, rather than just 'steal my stuff back from him'. Maybe that's just me.

As for the louisville slugger replies, you guys are full of it. Sorry, but you are. Either that, or you need your heads examined. Assault with a deadly weapon, or even attempted man slaughter, is a lot worse than misdemeanor theft. Get your priorities straight, or at least stop acting like internet tough guys. Buck made the exact right choice, and the smart choice, by getting the cops involved.

I doubt he bought both objects from the thief. Regardless, he is in possession of stolen property.
