HU plays radio louder than CDs...Why?

I don't know much about JVC.....but all of my older Pioneers had a featured called "Source Level Adjustment", in which you could increase or decrease the relative volume of other sources (CD player, aux input, etc) in relation to the radio tuner. So, if you set the CD player SLA to +4, then at the same volume level (say...volume 25) the CD would be louder than the radio.

Does your JVC have any feature like this?

Haha....you're right. For some reason I read it and thought it said JVC //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif
I'll check it out today to see if it actually has that "Source Level Adjustment" but I doubt it, haven't seen that before on my H/U.

I've got an inexspensive JVC head unit and it does this too. I never really looked at the manual for a reason. I just figured it was the way the cd was recorded. Some of the burned cd's I play are loud and some are not. The radio is always the same though. So I think it has something to do with how the cd was burned.

Burned CD's can vary in recording level especially if they were made from mp3's that you downloaded. European and classical CD's are often recorded at -10dB which is lots lower than contemporary stuff. Most radio stations use audio compression equipment that maintains a high average output level, same reason that TV commercials are louder than the programs. Before blaming the CD player try playing a regular commercial CD of some pop music and see how that compares to the radio.

burnt w/levels too low. i'm just guessing it wasn't a direct copy.

cd's can be ripped 800 ways from good. software/encoding/analog vs. digita inputs/EQ's the list goes on. You might try 'normalizing' your songs before burning next time to reach for 0 db levels.
