You will need to install a switch for manual operation or run it off of a relay that is turned on by REM.

lol, I was trying to do the same thing but couldnt' figure out a good way to turn it on off.

What voltage does the REM itself carry? Could you just wire the positive to the rem and get the voltage reading from that? Though it would be the head unit voltage, not the voltage the amps are seeing...but i'd rather have that than a switch.
