How to unlock fatory radio?

My cousin just got a new car, its a 2000 grand am. He put a new engine in, and when he got it back, the factory radio was locked. I was wondering if there was a universal code to put in to unlock it? If not, how do we go about getting it unlocked?

get the vin number of the car and the serial number off the radio and call the tech service at your local Pontiac dealer...when you get it...write it someplace safe so no one steals your radio //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

could call a pontiac dealer or so.

he should look in his glove compartment and hope that all the original papers of the car are still there. if he's lucky he may be able to find the code paper in the there. when i bought my car used the original papers were still in the glove compartment.

some cars factory stereos have a lock that acts like an anti theft device. when the radio is unplugged or loses it's power source it will basically not operate untill a proper code is input. when the code is re-input it will operate like normal.

basically if someone steals it. they are pretty much ****ed w/o the code and end up with a dead unit.

Gonna bump an old thread...

We are trying to unlock his radio finally, and right when the car is turned to the on position, "INOP" comes on the screen for a few seconds, followed by "LOC".

When I press and hold 2 and 3, nothing ever happens. He thinks he may have tried putting in codes too many times, and its locked up. In the manual it says something about leaving the car in the RUN position for an hour to reset it, to try to allow us to put in the codes again.

Does this sound right? Anything else I need to know?
