How much of an effect does tuning a box actually have on subs?...

The whole tuning thing has me quite confused hehe. Although i know what people like to tune enclosures to, i dont know why //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif . what would the diffference between an enclosure tuned to 30hz be compared to lets say 35hz?

Remember it may be different depending on your install and vehicle, but basically the lower you tune a box, the flatter frequency curve you will have while in theory, being able to play slightly lower and a higher tuning gives you a 'peakier' response and slighly less lower frequencies.

Pretty much, but remember that is only a general rule of thumb that a higher tuned enclosure will peak at a higher frequency and depending on numerous outside factors may also post a higher peak spl level and a lower tuned enclosure will peak at a lower frequency, not neccesarily decreasing high frequency reponse since you should have a low pass filter on your subs anyways. It all depends on your tastes so its best to try different enclosures until you find one that suits your listening needs.

Depends on the sub actually. What happens with a given tuning depends on the sub, the volume of the box and how it all interacts together. For example, throwing a XXX12 in a box tuned to 40 Hz would yield a huge response peak while putting an Assassin 8 in a box tuned to 40 Hz would give you the flattest response that driver is capable of.

Every driver has an ideal tuning and volume combination that will result in the flattest response. Go above the optimum and there will be a noted peak in the response. Same thing happens if the box is igger than ideal. Tune lower and the result will be a shelf in the low end response a couple dB lower than the rest of the freq range.

No, not necessarily. It's fully dependent on the driver itself and its parameters. The lower the tuning USUALLY means that you get more low frequencies, but if the system actually rolls off later than that, it's really a moot point.

How do you know what the ideal tuning and volume combination is? Is that possible to tell from woofer parameters?

The T/S parameters of the sub are plugged into various equations depending on the desired alignment and viola! These equations can be found on the net in various locations.
