i'm looking into buying a stand up jet ski, older one, kawasaki 550 or 650, i've found 2 so far, 1 has the cirtificate of origin but no title no registration, the other one has the hull ID numbers, no title no registration, how do i get title and registration

Depends on the state. Some states may not even allow you to title something that doesnt have a registration. And if it is allowed you will have to jump through several hoops.

Save yourself the headache and find one with the registration.

Or you could just try and ride illegally and hope you dont get caught.

i live in florida, marine patrol here are a nightmare, i want a standup ski so i can do freestyle out of the beach, so yeah needs titling, stand up on a flat pond is pointless lol

First thing ,

GET A SUPERJET //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Get over to PWCToday and you will get all the answers there.

You can find these old hulls with titles for way under $100 and in many cases for free.

You could title the thing as a home built but I wouldn't bother jumping through those hoops for a 550 unless it's a full PJS SS from back in the day.

Sit to ski, sit to pee.

Or you could do what you do with cars and get a rebuilt title from a broken one and then just take the vin numbers and put it on one of those.
That right there is highly illegal but just so you know, your average local water cop won't be able to tell the difference between what you ride and any other older Kawasaki ski. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Once you get that ski make a trip over to Daytona for the freeride in January http://www.daytonafreeride.com/ , nothing like 300+ standups on one beach.

well im a cheap bastard and i've found 550sx and 650sx for between 300-500$, don't need a trailor i got a pickup truck

no no, thats each, i found a 550 for 275$ no title but has hull numbers, and i found a 650 in tampa for 400, and i found a 650 here in melbourne for 150 that needs a carb clean and a fuel pump.

Find something legit.

I've been seeing the same scams with vintage motorcycles, people that "just haven't filled out the title", "moved from out of state and haven't registered it yet", blah blah. Shut up and get me a clear title in this state or we're not doing business.

yeah i pretty much agree, ski's are a little different because law states you realy don't need a titled vessel to ride private lakes or pondes, but i plan to take it to the beach so that doesn't do me a **** bit of good lol

That 650 for $150 have a title ?

Don't bother rebuilding the carb (fuel pump is built into it), instead replace it with a Mikuni. You can pick up a 44 mm Mikuni for less than the rebuild kit for the carb and it will wake that motor up nicely.

I would jump on it either way but I would part the thing out.

I have a bare X-2 hull with title that I could use the 650 as a parts donor and have a fun little ski for next to nothing.

How much do you have to spend on a ski (remember that you will need some gear to go riding)?

There was a neat little 650 square nose Superjet in the Ft Myers area that the guy wanted $700 for. A much better ski for freestyle and surf fun than the SX plus it doesn't take much to get good power out of them.

What ever you get I'm sure you will have a blast on it. Maybe you can hook up with some of the locals and take a spin over to Sebastian, I love that place and the monster hole on a good day can't be beat.

yeah i live 20 minutes from monster hole, the 650 for 150 had no title. Im not real good with 2 stroke engines but i know car engines pretty well, the guy said when you dripped fuel in the carb it would run but otherwise not, so i assumed its not getting any fuel obviously, but still no carb. i found a guy who put a 550 in a 440 hull brand new engine worked over a bit body has been restored and repainted, its like a brand new ski with title, beautiful wants 700 for it, if i could find a superjet for less than a grand i would look into it, from what i understand as far as fun in the surf goes, superjets are the way to go, unless you can shove a 750 engine into a 550 hull, from what i understand thats a pretty potent combo...

what is the difference between salt water and fresh? and don't say the salt, i mean does something have to be done in order to ride salt water? or is it just bad for you ski in general

Salt is nothing to be afraid of.

I have always run my skis in salt and as long as you flush the motor and spray the bilge (motor and everything in there) with a good spray like Boeshield T-9 you will get years of trouble free riding. I'm running a 19 year old electrical system on my square and never have a problem. It has been sunk many times and always starts once dry.

Do your self a favor and look at this site http://www.x-h2o.com/index.php

Check out the classifieds and look for deals.

Squares pop up from time to time and you can find one with a 701 in your price range. Even a 650 SJ with a few tricks can be a fun ride and can be a blast in the surf. Just about everyone who starts off with an older Kawasaki sooner or later sees the light and gets a Superjet. It's not all hype, so try to get the best platform for your money.

A few people from your area post on there and every so often we get together at Sebastian. I'm sure they can help you find something decent and get it up and running.

Bottom line, get a square nose (1990-1992 650 6m6 motor, 1992-1994 701 61X motor) in running condition. If you look hard enough you might even find a round nose (1996 and up 701 62T motor). Most prefer the RN (round nose) over the SN (square nose) for the look but hulls are identical so why pay more for the newer top deck.

If it already has the popular mods (pipe, prop, shortened handle pole, footholds,..) all the better.

If you find one that's all stock than don't worry. The gang over at X-h2o will help you get the most out of it for little $$$.

I'm rambling on a bit but unlike car audio, I do know jetskis.

Feel free to PM me here or on the "x" if you need any help at all.
