I got bored so I decided to just hook them up to see how they sounded. Nothing fancy, just hooked up one 6.5/tweeter to the DLS amp. Its actually a 3 channel amp and has the 2 front channels and a sub channel. I set them on the seat to hear the type of sound they made. They sound very clear. Surprisingly loud too. Didnt have any punch, but thats not expected with a speaker and tweeter sitting on a seat freeair.
Ended up listening to a couple tracks with the speaker alone, then I actually found an Eminence Alpha 8 underneath my passanger seat. Woot. The other 6.5/tweet was still in the box in my house, so I just connected the Alpha 8 on the other channel. Was ghetto as hell, but the big 8 actually sounded great with the clean signal and nice tweeter from the Focal. Everyone says that pro audio speakers are garbage, but they can sound great. The Focal set didnt have the low vocals or low bass guitar sound that I like since they were freeair and not even in a baffle, but the Alpha 8 really filled that in. They blended pretty well actually. I think that when I put these Focals in my next car, Im actually going to put a nice 8 in each kick. You could definately hear the difference in sound on the Alpha 8 from when I had them bridged way down on a Crunch 4 channel with the gains cranked, compared to a higher ohm load with everything set in a way that wasnt trying to squeeze every watt out of the amp. Sounds like a completely different speaker. Now I remember why Eminence builds the speakers that are in some of the nicest guitar and bass cabinets that you can buy.
Wasnt a real test or review or anything, but so far Im really happy with the sound of the Focals.
