The Wistles Go WOOOOOO!
Ok, heres the deal... a friend of mine used to drive an astro. he just got a new car and so being into car audio and spl competition, naturally i asked what he planned to do with it. he said i dont knwo make an offer. we talked for a while and $300 seemed to be the figure we were both around. its in decent shape. no body rust, still runs well, new tires, etc.

SO, having an astro available for a few hundred bucks is making me consider getting into competition. People in toledo rarely break 150. ive never seen it at the shows around here ive been to. 145 seems to be about the max. so competition wouldnt be TOO much of a problem, granted i learn what im doing. and i seem to have a better idea than most do around here. (i see only one or two burps at local comps, most people just crank gains and volume when time goes)

Also, after college, i was really considering opening a stereo shop, as im not too impressed with the local ones here and i think a good audio business would do well here. and a van hitting good scores locally would be somewhat of a good advertisement for a business (especially for kids hoping to get loud who attend shows)

so to buy the astro or not.. hmm.. any comments?

also, i was curious as to what the awards usually are for winning your class in comps.. i wouldnt need it to be much but id like to do a little better than just breaking even each time (like 20 to enter usually)

not expecting to win states or anything just looking to have some fun.

(yes i know its gonna be expensive, and probably more expensive than i think.. but little by little i could probably get respectable scores)

worth it?

down here these is a red astro thats filled with concrete/5 layers of dynamat/ no windows/ lexan front window/3 alternators/10 batteries/hydraulics/9x12's.. sponsorered by custom wheel connection, cerwin vega and a paint shop down here...

that thing was hitting high 150's last time i saw it...

didn't seem that loud outside.. when he drove it around the lot and showed off the hydralics.. it wouldn't idle at any speed, he had to hit the gas to get it to move.. i guess cause of the weight... was a pretty cool vehicle though. just take out the back seats and wall it off.

Yea, my dad has an astro, Its what we use to trasport alot of shit in for our shop. THERES ALOT OF ROOM IN THAT BADBOY, I was thinkin bout gettin one and and putttin so many woofers i nthe beast, but i dont wanna have to go through buyin another alternator, or having ot much stuff for passengers, or gettin my stuff jacked :), but for 300!!! Hell yea ! grab it!

plopy no there isnt dynamat in it he didnt compete with it im just thinking abotu buying a normal astro for cheap and then getting into the comps.

frost, i wasnt really looking to compete before this deal came about. and i doubt i could find an E-150 for as cheap as i can get this astro.

im not too familiar with db drag regulations.. but i dont know if id want to end up in the extreme classes with the 6 ton concrete filled masterpieces that are up around 180 db. i just want the van to be competetive in a class where i could still run a wall and like 2 15s without spending tens of thousands making the cockpit into the perfect SPL cabin.

im looking to keep the seats in, keep it set up that i could still drive it down the street. anybody know what class this would be?

and what kind of money would i be looking at to get 150s? i hope i could do it under 3 grand?

anybody with db drag experience help me get soem ideas straight

thanks

The guys over on SIN took a '74 Econoline and hit 150's on the older TL with a $250 investment. They used two 15's in a wall, IIRC - older RF drivers if memory serves me right. Do a search for "Team deCAF".

Andon--hit me up man--i'd be glad to come up and help you out man. once i get my cutty rollin we'll show car stereo one and all those garbage *** companies in toledo how its done man. i'm just down the road-still in the 419 tho.

hey bonesninja id love for you to come up and chill with me and my dudes and help up out with this project if it gets goin. ill make sure to send you a PM if i do buy the van.. i should know within a week or two. im gonna need all the help i can get probably.

but yeah man id love to show CS1 and TAS whats really up. im sure theyll act like they couldve done better. but id love to beat the TAS spl truck. dotn knwo if youve seen it.. its a late model suburban z71 walled with plenty of t30001 amps and 4 15" power T1 subs. last coupel times ive seen them on the mic they were around 135 hahaha. i can picture their faces when we hit 10-15 db higher with 2 15s and only 2 amps.

maybe im dreaming with this whole project.. but hey if i end up buying the van ill at least have somethin to do.. and i love car audio so much that odds are if the vans here ill work on it.
