Been out of the game for a while. And im kinda lost.I used to be really into this stuff, but i haven't touched anything audio related in about 5-6 years other than a few deck installs here and there. Has much changed ? in 6 years.

Short answer is yes. What exactly are you looking at doing?
Well I’d like to get back into the hobby, I’ve always been a bang for buck kind of guy, liked to look for the hidden gems but don't mind spending money when/where its important.

In my old car ford escort ZX2 ,I used to have a Lanzar optidrive 1000.1d on an audiobahn( I got cheap don't judge me LOL) 12" aw1206q (flame Q) in a 3cu ft vented enclosure tuned to 30ish hz with an interchangeable port for spl tuned to 45hz.

Front stage was a set of polk momo's that i got 2nd had off a guy i worked with. I had them in custom door enclosures, i was using a an MTX amp that i bought on my Circuit city accommodation.

I lost it all when my car got totaled. At the time i was an installer at circuit city (right around the time they were circling the drain), so my hrs were cut and i had to get a 2nd job, I had just bought a new car($400 car payment) and a new system was not in the budget, on top of that working as an installer for a retail store kind of killed my appreciation of the hobby. Fast forwarded 5 years , I met a girl, got an apartment ,got married, priority’s changed, money got tight, racked up debt, lost apartment lived with parents , paid off debt, bought a house ,cars paid off and here we are today. I want to get back into what I used to love.

Seems like all the big names are still around some seem to have been acquired by other companies. Seems like DD, RE,ED are still around adire audio seems to have fallen. I guess it’s too much to ask for a summary of the past 6 years ,I was just kind of wondering what brands are a buzz, and if there are any brands that used to be good that should be avoided or vice versa. Seems like MB quart was acquired but still make some decent stuff for a fair price.

Anyway at the moment my current project I'm just looking to build my wife an inexpensive setup.

Here's what i have pieced together for my wife's car. 04 Saturn ion redline

HU: pioneer DEH P770mp (from my old car)

Front stage:pioneer Ts-d1320c 5.25

Amp: MB quart fx2.60

sub amp: MB quart onx1.1500d

subs:no idea

I'm mostly looking clarity so i guess this will be a SQL setup. I don't know what subs or sub to go with but i'm looking at 2 12s or 10s in a small sealed enclosure or one 12 in a large vented enclosure.

nice choice of comps. Alot of ppl underestimate those Pioneers

For SQL (more so SQ) subs that like small boxes, Dayton comes to mind instantly (HO series for small boxes, HF for larger boxes). partsexpresslcom has them. I run 2 of the Dayton reference HO 10s in a small ported box (2 cubes before all disp) tuned to 29-30hz and it sounds great with only about 400w to each sub on a kicker zx750 amp. They are also pretty much impossible to beat for the price.

With roughly 1500w on tap, you could do 2 of the dvc 12 inch dayton HOs in a small sealed and do pretty good. Or you could go ported (the 10s only come in 4 ohm single voice coil but the 12s come in single 4 or dual 4)

or for something SQL with probably a little more "L", I'd say SSA Icon or Sundown SA's or DC lvl 3s

^^^Good suggestions above.

Well we have all been there. Sounds like you have bounced back. I was out of the car audio scene for a while when I was traveling overseas frequently, but got back into it when I got to Japan and Germany..and now I am really into again now that I am in the States. Well you know car audio...the old school big names are still around (Rockford, Kicker, Alpine, MTX, DD, etc). Some of these are getting there equipment made in China. You will also see names like Sundown, Audioque, Fi Audio, Ascendant Audio, DC Audio, just to name a few. All make rock solid equipment. However, you will see a lot of companies using the same board for an amp, HU, etc and slapping a different case and name on it. It's not hard to get loud these days, but getting loud with clarity is another story. You will also see names like Irragi, KnuKonceptz, XS Power, Mechman, and the list goes on. A lot of people are using welding cable for power cable. Hell I use Trystar 2/0 wire in two if my rides, they make it in 30 different colors and will even do custom printing to read anything you want on it. A lot of people are customizing and modifying their subs. For instance, you can send in X brand sub and a company like PSI can take that dual voice coil (500 RMS) sub and beef it up to a sub that does 1000 maybe 1500 watts RMS. This is becoming very common.

You can definitely find some hidden gems. Check out the classified section on this site, craigslist, eBay, etc. I found 2 Audioque 3500.1D for under $700 for both, they retail new for $799-$1499. AQ3500D.1 Amplifier

Quick funny story...I just picked up my Suburban from the shop (...fuel pump went out) and one of the mechanics came around and asked if I compete in car audio competitions. I told him know. Then he said that he was thinking about it and that he had two AudioBahn 12's in a pre-fab box on some 5000 watt SPL amp that was louder than my set-up. LOL...While my system in my Suburban is not the baddest on the planet, but 6 Memphis Mojo's on 2 Audique 3500.1D....for real!!! I know he was trying to get a demo from me, but I did not have time.
