Head unit mounted vertically?

So I just bought a head unit for my boat, something that plays CDs, mp3, has a USB hookup, etc. Its a Sony CDXGT550UI‏. Problem is I don't have a ton of room in the cabin of my boat. I asked sony if I could mount the unit vertically to save room and they said they don't recommend it. They didn't say why and they didn't say it wouldn't work. It really just came across as a canned response. I don't see what it wouldn't work. What do folks here think?

the only reason i could see it not playing right is if you are using CD's and some waves hit the boat and it moves the headunit around. i guess it would work vertical tho
