GIS Mapping

I'm starting to use ArcMap here at work (local government). I'm currently getting trained using one of ESRI's online courses. Just wondering if anyone knows where I can get e-books or additional training/reading material that I can take a look at in addition to what I'm doing. I'd like to get as much info as possible for my own personal benefit. I know it's a bit of a longshot, but there's gotta be a couple people who know about GIS mapping here. Thanks in advance //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/veryhappy.gif.fec4fed33b4a1279cf10bdd45a039dae.gif

I work for the city's parks and recreation department, specifically for the maintenance side. Work orders are done by hand and we are switching over to going electronically. I'll be using Arc GIS to pretty much digitize all the parks and the medians that we work on (about 40 some parks).

It sucks because some of the maps are from '03 and certain things like buildings aren't even there anymore. We have maps from '06 but they are quite horrible with heavy shadows and such. I pretty much have to add all the features onto the '06 maps. Gotta get a GPS unit and pretty much mark each asset in the park (bench, tree, trash can, rest room). Basically the goal is to get what is visible from above. Down the line they want to get specific and do irrigation and such.

I am barely starting to learn how to use the software and it's fairly easily, but I'd like to advance myself so I can be made a full time employee. City Council is lame and they didn't approve any PT to FT positions and this is a position that will need to be FT, so the more I can show that what I'm doing is necessary and will need to be a FT position, the better. Hopefully I can also get the title of a GIS Analyst down the line and make even more money, it's about twice the pay as well. I may even end up getting my Master's in this field if I can.

Yeah, I saw a few links but I have Surf Control here at work //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif So I saved the links and will be checking them out when I get home. I'd prefer something interactive that has exercises, but e-books will still work, I just learn better by doing.

I am an intern at a local government run electric utility and they have ArcGIS on their computers here, I have never used it though and have no clue how to, lol.

It does wonders...fairly simple. I started out learning by watching someone use it, then I got some hands on experience digitizing features. Now I need to actually learn the toolsets and such.

What books are they? Maybe I can see if I can find a few copies online or possibly even the library. They had me on 9.1, but the ESRI online training requires 9.2, so I have the trial for now but our IS dept will be installing the retail version shortly.

I am going to have to use a program here at work called Utility Center from UAI, but it isn't GIS per se I don't think.

its just the books that come with the software. do you have any idea how expensive that software actually is? i was shocked when my boss told me they paid nearly 6k for it plus all the extentions for it.

Wow, I didn't realize how much it was but I knew it was quite costly. I'll be using Arc GIS with Cityworks (the program we'll be using for our work orders). Unfortunately the program is tailored for the public works and water & power departments, but the city wants us to use this so they save more money when other departments begin to use it. For the Parks dept it's not really the program we need, but we can deal with it. Can't do anything about it but at least it gives the few of us who will be using it the upper leg when they expand it to other departments.

The best way to learn, at least for me, was just to play around with the software and see what does what. I was completely self taught so its not hard to learn.
Yeah but it sucks when I don't have access to some of the maps. They're located on the ID dept's network, but at least now I have the one's from the ESRI online training course to mess with.
