garage sale sub for girlfriend

I just purchased this ancient sub in a sealed box for $20 for my girlfriend's car. Her fronts are stock with no bass so I figured any bass is better than none.

The sub is a MTX blue thunder 10". It's the older model that had a black dustcap/cone, not the newer blue and silver dustcap/cone.

Does anyone have any experience with these? I had trouble finding the specs, but I believe the power handling is 250wrms. I'll probably buy a budget amp to push the recommended 250rms but hopefully it sounds decent and not too muddy, but most likely still like shit when comparing to my Fi BTL. Anyways, thanks for the help.

The Blue Thunder models came with gray cones with blue writing on them. The older versions were the Thunder 3000, 5000, and 7000s. They also had the Black Gold subs that had black cones and dust cap.

Does the back of the magnet say anything? Does the dustcap just say MTX on it?

I have used the 3000, 7000, 8000, 6000, and Blue Thunder Legend (equivalent to the 5000, and 6000). They don't sound too bad sealed but sound like *** ported. It's probably between 200-400rms and it should let you know when it's reaching it's mechanical limit. From my experience, they usually reached mechanical limits before thermal limits.

Yea that's the one. It has the blue writing on it. I will pull it out to check out the magnet when I drop by her place but I figured I'd ask around to see if anyone has ever own one and have recommendations for the setup. I will most likely try throwing 250rms at it and stuff the sealed enclosure halfway because I heard generally MTX subs like larger enclosures. But thanks for the info. I'll keep you guys updated on this really low low budget system. All in the install,... right? ahha

I will try out my blue thunder legend ported in a few different alignments and see how it sounds. I'll let you know what I think sounds OK with it. I only played around porting the lower end and upper end models of that time.

Thanks man, email me at drwang@ucsc.edu

when you find out. In the meantime, I'm still looking around for an amp that pushes 250rms. So far I got the wires and sealed enclosure.

how much power are you giving that BTL? IIRC those P800.2 are only 800rms bridged....
The actual output is actually around 900rms. But I understand where you're coming from. I'm greatly underpowering the btl, but I want to make sure it breaks in properly and I have a tendency to want to crank it up. I am still saving up money for a T20001bd which I can hopefully get around christmas or after christmas which will have left around a month's worth of breakin time for the sub. With those 2000+rms going to the btl, it's going to shine =)

I have pics posted up in the fi forums if you look up my user name: drwang

But for now, I'm going to try to finish off my girlfriend's car and see exactly how low a budget can you get a decent sound system for with the right installation. I'm aiming for under $150. Can I do it? I'll keep you guys posted and put up pics when it's all complete.
