Frustration. . .

I finally got an amp and a ported box built for a PPI dcx124 that a friend sold me. Everything was fine for about 2 days. I'm riding down the road bumpin, and then all of a sudden. . .nothin. So when I get home I check everything out, all seems cool, except it's probably about 120+ degrees in the trunk. So I figure the protection is coming on from it being so hot outside/in the trunk. So I wait a little while for it to cool off and check agian. Still, everytime the bass hits the amp flashes into protect, and as soon as the bass is over comes back on. The sub seems to make an aweful rattlein noise.(dont know if it's caused by the amp or the sub?) Anyway, I took the sub out of the box and hook the amp to just 1 coil(sub is dual 4ohm) and the amp stays on but the rattle remains. Hook it seperately to the other coil with the same settings on the amp and the amp goes in and out of protect agian. It will play at very low settings and volume if it's wired to a 2 ohm load. So my theory is a blown voilcoil. But I have no idea if that could cause my amp to malfunction..? Also, I hooked the amp up to an old sony speaker(not sub) that was rollin around in the trunk and everything worked fine no matter what the settings on the amp were. I have a buddy that could let me test the amp on his w7, but if it's infact the amp, I dont wanna run the possibility of it damaging his sub. In short, my questions is:

1) Could a blown voicecoil cause an amp to malfunction?

Amp works fine running a 4 ohm load on one coil...but not the other.

Amp also works fine on a regulare sony speaker. (which I may add didnt blow even with the gains and bass boost all the way up.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif )

Sorry for any rambling, but I tried to include as much information as possible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One more question incase the sub is blown. . . Will an RL-p 12" with 750 watts from an kicker zx750.1 in a ported box tuned at 32hz be good? ; p

Yes.The sub is definatly blown as it started to smoke when i hooked it to my friends amp that he used to run this sub with before I purchased it. But my main concern is if the sub was blown because of the amp malfunctioning, or if the amp was malfunctioning because of the sub being blown. I'm pretty certain now that the sub was the problem. As stated before though, I dont want to run the amp on a friends sub incase the amp fried my sub. I didnt use any gain setting tutorial, but I did set it by ear, and it was set on maybe 2 1/2 of 11. I dont think I clipped it to death. Maybe the sub was just due to fail. It had been pretty abused. (even got wet I believe) Well, looks like I'm in the market for a new sub.

Yep, ran 1200 watts through a CVR and did the same exact thing, it's the VC. Nice work troubleshooting first, most people just post. BTW, I sold that sub on Ebay, fully disclosed condition and sold it easily!

I think what happened what you blew one voice coil which lowered its resistance hence the amp going into protect when its hooked up to it. Also when wired in parallel presents a low load to the amp since a coil is blown.
