my gf bought a compaq laptop from her aunt a year or two ago and she tried to use it today and forgot her uncles password (he died a while back, so she bought it from her aunt to help with the bills). Is there anyway she can recover the password? Thanks in advance guys!!!

See if this works, I think I did it like this before.

Start the computer in safe mode, login windows using the Administer account, go to edit user accounts and remove the password for that account.

If you still can not get in use your windows cd restart the computer and boot into setup than select continue than it will ask if you want to try to repair windows say yes than it will reinstall a lot DON'T WORRY FILES ARE SAFE. Than there should be no password. I can not think off the top of my head but I think there is a way of doing it by going into setup and going into manual repair but as I said can not think of it right now.

You could always boot to a linux LiveCD, to get access to the hard drive, then:

a) edit the password file (not a clue where the file is in windows/sys32)

b) copy any files you need onto a thumbdrive, then reformat and install the OS of your choice cleanly.

On an older laptop, this might be a good excuse to wipe it clean. Should get it's performance back... and to remove any confidential dead-guy files.

start>run>type in "cmd">net user>net user x *>type password or hit enter for none>repeat last step

x is the name of the account you want changed. This only works if you have admin rights, like the one if admin in safe mode is allowed.
