For those in college...

S&M and dorm rooms don't mix...unless your roommate is out of town.
Did I just say that?

lol, Its good to have tools even if stuff in your room breaks. I know at my school putting a work order for some minor broken thing will take weeks and that if it even gets fixed at all by them.

I noticed a lot of kids in my hall had broken desks, mostly where the keyboard slides out. Usually looked like someone had sat on them ripped the wood and blew the screw out. I fixed multiple ones of those when I first got there.

S&M...theres nothing like a Sexiled roomate

Camera is a good thing if you've got the money for it, shower sandles are a must. Besides the basics there isn't anything you absolutely need, and if there is you can probably buy it there or wait until you come home first, where are you going to school?

shower sandles are a must.
x eleven billion.

I'm in an apartment this year and don't have to worry about that.

Tools are definitely good.

See what kind of stores are around you (target, walmart, etc.) and ask for gift cards to those places just in case you forget something.

Also, see if upperclassmen will tell you what they did with their room, organization wise. Alot of my friends built lofts so they had more room for other stuff. My freshman and sophmore year (same style dorm), i made a sweet little shelf setup that held my roommates T.V., my stereo, DVD's, etc. Made things MUCH more organized.

Fans are always good.

A shower tote to carry around your shampoo, soap, etc. to the showers.

I'll think of more later.

thats bad, if youre a freshman

if it was a coed freshman dorm, thats bad no matter what year you are

no, my dorms co-ed as well. Im a sophmore, but i started college when i was 16 (not all of my credits transfered) and they wern't sure to go off of age or what as far as dorm placement, so since im 18 now they were origonaly going to put me in a freshmen dorm, but i talked to them and they decided to let me dorm with the rest of the upper classmen

For those of yall too lazy to read the link i posted...

1) Comforter- don’t let the fact that almost everyone brings a television or computer with them to school fool you. Your bed is the center of your entertainment and location where you’ll be doing most of your work if you have a desktop computer. Making that bed comfortable for you, your friends when you hang out, and your girl friend or boyfriend should be top priority. Make sure you have a comfortable comforter. Don't bother with decorative pillows and crap like that.

2) Sheets- unless of course you like sleeping on a mattress that has stains that you don’t even want to know where they came from you need sheets. What’s important about the sheets is that you should have four of them and they need to be the length of the bed. There’s nothing like coming up to your school and realizing the sheets you have don’t fit your standard issued mental hospital mattress. I suggest four sheets for laundry purposes. Doing laundry cost me $160 a semester and I did my laundry every other weekend. If you have four sheets, you can hypothetically go eight weeks, the bulk of the semester, without having to clean them. I say hypothetically because if you’re having a lot of *** you might want to clean up more often. Unless of course you like to play jokes on your friends like me and say, “Hey, guess what you just sat in.”

3) Mattress Pad- my last semester at Alfred State I was lucky because they tripled my room like they always do and when the third kid no showed I took the extra mattress and put it under mine. School mattresses are notorious for feeling like a slab of concrete. Anything you can do to make the experience better is recommended. I suggest the Mattress pads because they are comfortable, but watch out, they do tear easily if you’re not careful.

4) Bed Raisers- If you can, don’t buy these at the campus store. The odds are they know you want them and will over charge you like they always do. Bed Raisers are very important because when you have a room no bigger than an igloo you need to think vertical to put your stuff away. And make sure you find some cinder blocks. Some raisers don't pick the bed that much off the ground, but if you can pick up some cinder blocks you will have enough room to fit just about everything under your bed. Make sure the cinder blocks are flat and not standing up. RAs do look for that because it is a hazard to your health.

5) Alarm Clock- Most likely you didn’t get your eight hours and forty-five minutes of required sleep and have not adjusted to wake yourself up on time automatically. While this can be done it takes some effort, and we’re all too lazy or too busy to do this. So the Alarm Clock is your best friend. I recommend the SONY Dream Machine. It plays CDs, has an FM / AM / Weather / TV receiver, and a very annoying buzzer that is sure to piss off your next door neighbor if you haven’t turned it off within thirty seconds. The best part about the Dream Machine? Your friends don't know how to mess with it unless you tell them how. If by chance you do get some time, try to get into the habit of getting eight hours and forty-five minutes of sleep. You'll feel better, and best of all your body will begin to wake up automatically without the clock. Or better yet, if you have a cell phone with an alarm function just use that instead of buying an alarm clock.

6) Lamps – I’ve had very bad experiences with the light in my dorm room. Of course, I’ve also found a way to break every lamp I’ve ever been given from the school in the most creative of ways. I definitely recommend you bring at least two lamps. If you can pull it off, try to make one of those a pole lamp. If you don’t need the poll lamp you can just put it away some where until you can take it home, and if you do need it everyone will thank you when it’s drinking time and there is not enough light to find their way to the can in time to avoid any unnecessary accidents.

7) Storage Units- if your bed gets high enough off the ground you can fit a large trunk under there. Or was it a large drunk? I forget which one it is, but you will face a time when you have too much crap in your room and need to put your junk away somewhere. I came to this realization when my dresser and desk draws were busting with crap and I couldn’t open them anymore. I suggest the plastic draws they sell at Bed, Bath & Beyond if you can grab them, but a good size trunk from Target* is just as good if it fits.

*Try as hard as you can NOT to shop at Wal-Mart. Don’t support the evil empire unless you need stuff and can’t get it anywhere else. The only thing Wal-Mart is good for is playing manhunt at 2am when you have nothing better to do. Just don't get caught. I'm now banned from TWO Wal-Marts.

8) Thermals - If you’re fortunate enough to go to college in the northeast, Canada, or anywhere else where seeing a human Popsicle on the side walk is an every day site you might want to look into getting thermal clothes. Extra long underpants, under shirts, stuff like that. You’ll thank me for this when it’s –35 and you’re warm and ready to go outside to get some beer. Thanks to Thermals I was able to go on a beer run in -28 degree weather at Potsdam. You can do it too!

9) Hangers- Bring enough hangers for your clothes and then a few extras. They’re good for hanging up your clothes, but they’re also a good stopgap solution if you want to hang your book bag or anything else from your walls.

10) Detergent, Dryer Sheets, Laundry bag, Laundry basket. – Laundry is the bane of everyone who doesn’t feel like smelling like a decaying skunk on a really hot day. Anyway, these four items are must haves. And when you get detergent get yourselves the HUGE jug containers that they like to put at the bottom shelf in grocery stores. Those will last an entire school year.

11) Quarters- Get $20 and break it into quarters. They are becoming more and more obsolete with the increasing use of the school ID card, but quarters are still good to have in case the machines break down. And they WILL break down. Don’t fool yourself. There's nothing like having the munchies at 4am and finding out the vending machine's card slot is out of service.

12) Posters – Unless you want your room to be like a Siberian Gulag you should bring at least three posters with you. I recommend you not bring any posters of half ***** women or men. This is a sign that you WILL NOT get laid.

13) Towels- Get 8 towels, one beach towel if you like to swim or plan on hitting a beach in the area, and one or two hand towels. Why 8 towels? Because if you use a towel twice before putting it in your laundry basket this will give you 14 days worth of towels and one extra towel to use on laundry day. We’re broke and need to save money, and this is one of the best ways to do it. Don't forget to pick up a bathing suit as well.

14) Bathroom stuff: Make sure you have something to carry your items back and forth from the bathroom. Most likely the school won’t let you leave your crap there and you might not want too. You also need something, anything, on your feet when you’re going from the bathroom to the shower and back. I’ve gone bare foot and I thought after looking at my feet that I had sentient life growing under one of my toes. Two bottles of shampoo, soap, some Stridex pads, cologne or perfume, a razor, and two tooth brushes should be included in your bathroom items. Remember you need to change toothbrushes every three months according to the A.D.A. A spare roll or two of toilet paper will save your life. You never know when you'll run out.

15) Duct Tape: You’ll know when it happens.

16) School supplies: It’s always a good idea to have one notebook for one class and one folder. Don’t mix and match because you’ll find a way to screw yourself over. I elaborate more on this one in my column on how to get an A. A pencil sharpener, pens, pencils, and some additional pieces of paper are all necessary. Try to get these items at home to save some money. But don't be excessive. One box of pens and pencils should last the year.

17) At one school my older brother went to, the medical center used to ask people to pull down their pants. Even if they came in with an elbow injury. At one school I went to, we won't name names, they only have two answers for you if you're sick. You either have Mono or you're pregnant. Despite those problems you should go to the medical center if you're sick for more than one day. You can get free condoms, cough drops, and pain relievers. I also recommend a multi-vitamin like Centrum. You’ll feel better after taking it because the slop that passes for school food is likely shredded news paper, and won’t contain any kind of vitamins and minerals you will need to get through the week. It’s also good to pack some Imodium A.D. for said school food. I.B. Proffen and Robotussin is highly suggested for aches and pain and colds if you can't get any at the health center. The pills work better than the liquid and we all know the liquid tastes worse than your school food. But don't stock up either, especially if there is an Eckerd or something near by.
