what if i just use the resin and not the fiberglass matt?that should go on smoother right?

if your painting mdf. all you really have to do is sand it, till it shines. primer/sand then paint.

dont bother with resin

Treat the endgrain of the MDF with wood glue. Sand it smooth once it is fully dry and then do what azbass said.

yeah, you would have to sand it either way. plus, resin is stinky
