mine is sub back port back...fine with me, but i haven't tried up/back

Id say it depends on the car, try it each way, becasue with my Wrangler that i had, the subs only sounded loud and good when they were facing you. Try each and every way u can, just rotate the box!

yes but if his car has a bridge gap then it should be perpedicular to the strut manifold and horizontal to the wheel well aperture
