Explain to me how gas stations "dont make much profit on gas"

About a week ago diesel was 3.99 at one gas station, and the other 3 near it were 4.40-4.65. Also last night half the gas stations were out of gas so all the others jacked gas up to 5 a gallon. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/verymad.gif.3f39c5c2fd57527b671fad3efdfac756.gif

typically they only make a penny or so per gallon from what i've heard. Plus it is illegal to price gouge, and i know in FL a few places have gotten busted/in a lot of trouble for doing it.

They make profits at times like this when there are hurricanes.

Becuase they bought the Gas a while back at W.e they paid, to sell it at 3.99 or w.e, but now the leftover they can increase there prices because they can be the elite 1's with the only gas in town etc.. But yeh thats how they make a profit, buy it cheap to sell it at the normal price, but then when a national crisis happens they can increase the price.

thats not the way it works.

Basically a station gets "credited" so much gasoline.

You have to pay the price of the last tank when you get your next shipment of fuel

I used to think that the same thing you did, that they already paid for that gasoline and then they are changing prices

And most stations only make a penny or two a gallon, and some stations don't make anything (bigger truckstops usually) because they make money on merchendise in the store

yeah I have read an heard that a descent gas station owner can pull in 6 figures a year. We got a private owned gas station back home and the family does well to say the least

They do well on sales of everything else in the store, from cigarrettes to pepsi's and chips, or whatever other random thing they sell. 3 cents per gallon is what the store I grew up working at made, and when you count in drive-offs and such, it really doesn't amount to much at all.

there are sometimes where we make 10 cents and other times where were loosing so it averages out to not much.right now were loosing because we got gas after the price went up, but the people around us got it before so they did not go up.
