Excited!

Hello Everyone,

Well my brother finally caved in and gave me his old setup. It consists of a 12" Solo-Baric, clarion cz702, Planet Audio AC2500. The bad news is that the set up does not come with a box for the subwoofer. I've been doing a little bit of researching on this website (very helpful since I'm completely new to this scene) and found out that a ported box tuned to a certain fq would be the way to go. Therefore, my question is should I go with a 2ft^3 ft tuned at 32hz box or 3ft^3 tuned at 35hz? I am very strapped on cash, so I can only buy a box for now. My next purchase will be upgrading the amp, but for it will have to do.

Yes, it is an L7. Sorry for not mentioning that earlier. The manual suggests that for a ported box the measurements should be between 1.75-3.25 ft^3 after sub displacement. The manual does not mention nothing about what the box should be tuned to. Not gonna lie a lot of this stuff is pretty confusing.

i would go with 3.25 cubic feet at least, if its the square 12, it has a little bit less cone area then a 15 and would need a proper sized enclosure to go with it. If its the circular solobaric 12 then you can go with 2.0-2.5. These measurements are after accounting port area. If your buying a box, most of the premade boxes dont even come close to their claimed cubic feet or stated tuning. You should opt a custom made box if possible. Tuning anywhere from 30-38 hz would be fine it'll be based on your listening preference.

Don't worry, man - once you really start getting into it, it's not too hard for this hobby to seem overwhelming. But if you stick around a while, you'll learn fast. Don't be afraid to ask, that's what we're here for.

Anyway, I'd put it in 3-3.5 cubes net (if you've got the space to give up). Those L7s love them a big enclosure, but what kind of music do you plan on playing it on? That'll really give us a good idea of where you want to tune at.

Also, what's the budget on this box? Do you plan on buying it from a vendor or building it yourself? If you're considering prefab whatsoever, throw that out the window. And as it's been said, be careful about overpowering that driver. It can take a little more than rated if it's clean power, but be careful.

Thanks for all the help guys.Yeah, while doing a bit of research one of the things that popped out often was to not overpower these subs. I will be looking for an amp that pushes a clean 800rms in the near future since the sub is rated for 750rms I believe. I was looking into purchasing a mobile sound works enclosure. It is 3 cubic feet tuned to 35hz since I listen to a variety of genres. The measurements of box are w37 1/4 x h17 x 14 for 120 dollars. trunk space is not an issue, but money is. Ill shop around my local audio shops but if i cant have one made for 150 would the enclosure im looking into be a decent purchase?

for a budget, those boxes look decent enough with double baffling and such. Most shops will charge you an arm and a leg for a custom subwoofer enclosure good luck with your hunt though.

Whoa, no kidding these local audio shops are ridiculously expensive when it comes to custom enclosures. Does anyone know somebody in CA that makes nice boxes at a reasonable price? Preferably in the central coast so I can avoid the shipping cost.

There's a bunch of people in Cali that can help you. Put a WTB thread on here and some vendors and other folks should hit you up.
