Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind

Anybody seen this movie? I have to write a 5-6 page paper on it for philosophy class. I'm about to go rent it, but this is the question I have to answer for my paper..

Given its availability, may (or should) we use technology to erase or change some/all of our memories, and if so when? What problems are raised by such technological prospects? What advantages and/or disadvantages would be introduced by it into human relationships, into our concept of the self, into the notion of what humanity essentially is and and what it deserves? In short, what was your reaction to the film, and how do you explain it and defend it?

Not asking you all to write it for me, so don't look at it that way. I just thought it was an interesting question and wondered what your all's thoughts on it were. Apparently in the film they erase the memories of certain people from people's minds hopefully easing the pain those people have caused.

Thoughts?

I enjoyed it. It was definitely an interesting movie, but after watching it you should be able to answer those questions if you keep them in mind while you watch it.

If you want something interesting to toss into the paper, there is presently research being conducted on a drug which possibly inhibits a memories ability to solidify in the mind.

Here's a segment of the article I read in Discover....actually subtitled Researchers take one step toward Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind;

As to the movie.....I liked it.

I haven't seen it for a couple years now, but I thought it was a pretty good film. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

The first time i saw the movie i wasn't all there and thought it was complete crap... the second time i watched it I realized how good it was. You definitely need to go watch it and make your own opinion, but i personally thought that our memories make us who we are and when we erase them we erase apart of ourselves... obviously that won't write your whole paper but hopefully it'll give you something to think about as you watch the movie.

You'd be surprised how much our memory of a person and their presence in our life can change the way we act and think.

x2
To write a school paper about an average movie is a waste of everyones time,,,,

Your teacher should have had you all write about a real classic instead of that POS...
even if you didnt like the movie, its a pretty good subject for a philosophy class to write a subjective paper about

I liked it

but I like most movies anyways, so my opinion on liking a movie is pretty much useless
