Equalizer... How it works?

Was wondering if anyone could tell me exactly how an equalizer works. I have one built in my deck. Is there a difference between turning my lows 40-80hz up on a equalizer and turning my sub level up? I know now that bass boost should not be used bc I was told it causes distortion.

Well you can cause distortion by turning the s/w level too high or turning the EQ up. Either way you're increasing the signal your deck is putting out and you have to adjust your gains accordingly. Turning up the EQ to +7 db at 40 hz is the same as using bass boost at 40 hz and turning it +7 db

The s/w level will increase the signal your sub sees throughout all frequencies, while the eq will increase the signal at that frequency range.

You should just keep your bass eq flat so you don't risk clipping, or if you do increase it, make sure you adjust your gains to match.

But then there would be no point in having an EQ. I know supposedly they add definition to areas you're lacking, but like he said, the distortion risk
So du u have ur EQ set to flat? When I set my gains I had my EQ on flat, my bass boost on 0 and my sub level on +6. I then turned my EQ on both my 40 and 80hz up and think it sounds much better.... But not if I am risking damaging my sub.
