Efficient

Well, how big is your current alternator?

I could run 2kW off mine and not get any dimming, but I have a 135a one that came stock...you might have a much smaller one. If so, there's really a limit to how efficient an amp you can get. And since you just won't have a sub amp, you need to budget a front stage amp in there. And front stage amps are usually much less efficient.

My 600 watt amp is in my truck. That system is out of the picture I am switching cars and getting a whole new system. I don't know the specifics of my car's alternator but I was just wondering if you guys could point some good quality brand names to look at.

I am lookin for a efficient amplifier. And by that I mean around 2000 watts rms without dimming. I don't mind doin the 1/0 ga wire and the new battery but is there any amps where I can get that power and NOT have to replace my alternator. Thanks guys

What makes you so dead set on not getting a HO alt. if I may axe?

Honestly I just got this car and I don't want to put anything into it that I can't take out. I don't plan on havin it for too long maybe 2 years tops. Plus the 300 price tag and the install doesn't make me leap for joy

Well, it really depends on your typical listening levels, source material, settings (whether or not the amp will truly output 2000w), other running vehicle accessories, etc etc.

Lets look at this from the "perfect world" viewpoint; If you had a 2000w amp on a constant and stable 14.4V system (which won't happen) and the amplifier was 100% efficient (which ain't gonna happen), at full power it would draw ~139A. That's best case scenario. 80% efficiency on 13.8V would be ~181A of current draw for full output. It takes power to make power, plain and simple.

But, if you aren't going to be pushing the full 2000w very often (due to volume, non-bass heavy source material, lower settings so the amp won't put out full power, etc etc) then the dimming may not be too bad. But, if you expect your amp to output a full 2000w on a stock electrical system; it simply ain't going to happen.

PS: We would need to know a budget before we could suggest amplifiers to you //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I think I can get a Orion 2500D fro what around 560 so I wouldn't mind spendin 500. Like I said I will do the 2 out of the Big 3 I just want to avoid gettin a new alternator. I do listen to alot of bass heavy stuff I would say 80% of the time. I would tell you what I plan on gettin but it depends on how much power I want to run. Right now I am looking really hard at 2 12's Rlp or avalanches so I want to run at least 1600+ but if I can get use more power I might look at 15's or even other subs.

As much as people want it to be; the big 3 (or big 2 in your case) just isn't this magical voltage stabilizer or current producer. It helps; yes......but it does not replace proper electrical component upgrades. You are still limited to the amount of current your alternator can provide. Without an upgraded alt/battery, you will not get a full 2000w out of your amplifier, and getting close to that will cause major voltage drop. No way around it.

IMHO, if you don't have/don't want to spend the $$ or do the modifications it needs to support such a big system, your money would be better spent on a system that fits within your limitations, rather then spending money on a system that operates/performs half assed because you exceeded what you can electrically support.

You know..

You can get a very loud and nice sounding system with under 2000watts easily.

I had a pair of Eclispe 8700 12"s with 750 watts that sounded as loud as anybody would ever want, it would bounce full beer cans off the roof of the car, never had it metered but she sounded pretty close to 140db

Some high efficiency Subs in a ported box will get plenty loud with 500 to 1000 watts.

Imagine 3 entry level RE's 12's off of an 800 watt amp, that would pound hard, sound nice and not require a new alternator.

I was just throwin 2000watts out there and no I wouldn't put 2500 watts to 2 rlps I was just saying I know that is a quality amp and I would be willing to pay in that ball park. Thanks for the suggestions. But I don't want anything under 1000 watts I currently have to Alpine S and a profile 600 watt amp and I just wanna be the big dawg in town and somethin to be decent in competions. One more question do you think I could get away with 1600 watts? cuz I at least want to do that.
