Hey,

Just a warning, I'm a car audio newbie //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif.

Anyways, my car sounds terrible from the outside when the subs are pumping. The rattle sounds terrible. I hear the way to get rid of this and make your car not sound like its about to fall apart is Dynamat. I went to their site and saw some different kits and products, like a trunk kit, doors kit, etc. What would I want to get? My budget is nothing about $200 (that's for everything, including install if it's difficult to install myself). I have no idea of my budget is feasible for what I am asking, but any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have Pontiac Grand Am, 2003.

Thanks!

i would buy a dynamat bulk pack extreme. do it yourself. follow instructions. very easy. directions show the best places to apply it.

then start looking for where the rattels are coming from. usually trunk lids, spoilers, and licence plates.

If you're paying retail for the dynamat extreme, at 120$ per door kit if I remember right, just enough material for all 4 doors should exceed your budget. Id say start with the 4 doors and the trunk. Learn to take everything apart and do it yourself. Shouldn't be hard on a Pontiac.

Buy a roller tool. Look for the other brands mentioned and shop around for a good price. Consider a bulk kit. Start with the 4 doors and the trunk. I am assuming your subs are in your trunk as theyd be with most sedans. Your main priorities to start should be to do a solid job of treating the areas around all the speakers in your system. Treat the trunk where the subs are and do a solid job of your door panels, inner and outter. Hit these areas first, then listen for further rattles or vibrations before moving on. Some people will bathe a whole vehicle in this shit many times over right off the bat because it makes for a good write-up. I say do the areas immediately surrounding all the drivers in your system first and then proceed as necessary. Maybe everything will sound perfect after just that. If not, listen for problem areas and concentrate your efforts in that area first. Maybe it'll be the roof, maybe it'll be the floor.

And this may sound like common sense but it doesn't occur to alot of people: Before you bother with any of this, empty your car out. Get change and other small debris out of the trunk, door map pockets, glove box, etc... You should be sure before hand that your problem is interior panel resonance and not random shit bouncing around in your storage areas before you start spending money.

It's not rattling inside my car as much as I'm concerned with the intense rattling from the outside. Will Dynamat help that at all? And thank you all for the detailed replies, they were very helpful.

Yes, newbie, Dynamat will help.

But it will cost double or triple your budget to apply to your entire vehicle, so you should do a search for a cheaper, and just as effective, alternative.

I've got 43sq feet of damplifier pro in my trunk alone.. Same trunk as yours.. It's a 2002 grand am havnt done doors but I'd assume 10sq ft in each door

Check my vids in sig.. Got a comparison vid inthere somewhere it's easy to install I'll pm you pics when I'm home If you want

Wait, so should the "Bulk Pack" work for me? And again, of what type? The bulk pack is 36.50 sq feet. The Trunk Pack is 20 sq ft, the Door Pack is 10 sq ft. For the Pro, anyways.

So maybe I could get like 40 sq ft of the regular Damplifier?

damplifier worked well for me

I wasnt going for all out dead sound in the car and damplifier worked fine

Damplifer pro is thicker and absorbs more of the rattle, the price justifies that.

Thanks for all the Second Skin reccomendations guys!

I appreciate the support and kind words!

To the op, Dynamat Extreme is a very good product. For what you get, it is pretty expensive, even if you get a deal on it but it will do exactly what you need.

$200 is a good amount of money so whatever you choose to do, make sure that you buy a vibration mat with a butyl adhesive (rather than aspahlt) and a thicker foil (4 mils is the thinnest you should go with). The thicker the foil the better, and the thicker the adhesive, the better (generally thicker adhesive means more rubber content which translates in to better vibration damping.) Not all butyl adhesives are created equal, but as long as you stick around 1.5-2 mm thick around .4 -.7 lbs psf you will be good

Hope that helps!

I would get 2 bulk packs of damplifier pro.. to fully do the trunk, lid, don't forget therear deck as well.. Doors.. 2 bulk packs should fully do the trunk and trunk lid all panels and front doors.. It took 43sq ft just to fully do my trunk, trunk lid about another 8 for the rear deck.. That's all one layer too.. So with 2 damp pro bulk packs you'll have enough foreverything and you cAn double layer some light spots like the inside of the door panels could use it... Also think about some secondskin SPL tiles..I used those in conjunction with damp pro..works a lot better
